This was one of the coins I recently purchased as part of an estate sale. It's painful to see an otherwise nice coin holed, but it is what it is. I'm including obverse, reverse, and edge photos and a photo of one detail on the reverse that might be a remnant of a jewelry attachment or something else. If authentic, it obviously is detailed by the hole, and probably also by an old cleaning, the scratches on the obverse, and whatever that is on the reverse if it isn't a die issue. The damage is awful on this coin. It would have been a nice one with a circulation cameo if it hadn't been holed and attached to a white gold bracelet.

My gut is that it is genuine, although I hesitated a bit on this one, and could be somewhere around a VG-08 or VG-10 details coin, but I sure welcome all opinions! I have no idea how to price this one.

I would appreciate all thoughts on:
authenticity
underlying grade (it is obviously details)
possible value as is

Thank you!

It looks like it was worn as a necklace of sort, either metal or leather, for some reason. I think it's fine F detail, hole and cleaned and worth about $20 Cdn. It's a hole fitter for someone.

Thank you! That helps me move this one along to someone else. I always wince when I see a better date coin that has been holed or abused.

Agreed with the consensus here - in the VG10 - F12 range. Definitely authentic... even has the characteristic strike weakness through the centre of the reverse. There are people who collect some of the oddball modifications of the 1858 20c. I have several love tokens make out of this coin for example. You won't get top dollar but it's collectable regardless... there are people for whom the first of anything is a crank-turner.
