I have read on Numista that there is a copper-nickel (cupro-nickel?) version of the Edward VIII 10 cent coin of East Africa. Does anyone know how scarce they are? Scarcer than the notorious East/West Africa mule? Also how do you definitively distinguish it from the typical bronze 10 cent coin?

I would say they are scarce but exactly how many were struck would
be almost impossible to say as they were struck on a wrong planchet.
It would be like how many 1944 steel cents were struck.

The best way to tell the difference is the weight.
Bronze 10.8g
Cupro 9.45g

Thanks Jimmy D. I have a few of these that I will assume are bronze. But they are weighing in at between 10.35 and 10.85 grams. What gives?

Though I see where you're original 11.34 g number came from - Numista.

The most obvious "tell" is the colour. Cupronickel (or "copper-nickel") is the same alloy that American "nickels" are made from, and is a dull silver-grey colour. Bronze coins are brown to red.

If you have an East Africa coin that's silvery in colour it might conceivably be a bronze coin that's been painted or plated, so the weight is a secondary check.

The error is technically a "wrong planchet" error, with a planchet for the cupronickel British West Africa penny struck using the British East Africa 10 cents dies.

I have a little less than 300 of them, all bronze by their color. I was going to weigh them too but I have to get up early in the morning .
