Here's a coin I'm thinking of adding to my collection. What grade do you think it deserves, and what are your thoughts on quality and eye appeal?

Looks like a solid strike, and I see no obvious wear. Because of the hairlines (some of which might be die polish lines), I'd say MS-62, but with good eye appeal.

I like the eye appeal for this coin. A couple questions. First, the line on the reverse from the "D" of DOLLAR to the wreath could be a die clash, a scratch on the coin, or a scratch on the holder. Do you have a feel for what it is? Second, there appears to be a bit of rub on the high points of the obverse, especially the hair above the eye, bottom hair curl, hair behind the ear, and middle of the cheek. I don't see corresponding rub on the reverse. Do you have a feel for whether it is cabinet rub?

Here are my initial thoughts, depending on the answers. If the rub is just cabinet rub, and if the reverse mark is either on the holder or is a die clash, this looks to be MS-62 to me, too. If the rub is on the reverse, as well, IMHO this would be a strong AU-58. If the reverse line is a scratch on the coin itself, I would fear a details designation.

Again, I like the original surfaces and overall appearance of this coin. This would have bourse floor appeal. Nice coin.

I'll guess MS-62.

The puffs (that is what I call them) on the crown look fully struck and show no wear. I would be at MS-62 here. As long as you don't mind the hairlines in the field, it's a solid looking coin.

when you blow up a photo on gold like this you are going to see a lot more marks on the surfaces. in hand I'm going to bet you dont see as many of them. TPG's seem to be a little more lenient on grading gold so I'm going with MS63.

I think it has a great appeal and luster. I will say MS-64

Is it a small scratch on the reverse above the D? Or a die defect?

I examined the coin carefully and confirmed that the reverse mark is a faint scratch, only visible at certain angles. PCGS didn't see any problems and the grade is AU-58. I like the coin and will keep it.

Thank you for the thoughtful comments!

Definitely a strong AU-58, and that light scratch is probably barely visible on such a small coin. Congrats on your purchase!
