I purchased an 1841 Braided Hair Cent from ebay and would like an opinion on if the coin has been improperly cleaned or not, or at all. I see some 'original' red on the obverse around the braids. If it can pass the grading process it will be worth several hundred dollars in my own grading mind. Thanks!

* The weight and diameter match authentically.

The red on the obverse doesn't look original to me. It appears to have some circulation wear, so original red color would be unlikely.

I would say cleaned and artificially toned, won't straight grade, IMO. There are several chemicals on the market like Coin Care that will give copper that sort of coloring. I will be curious what others have to say.

The toning is pretty weird. In my opinion, it looks cleaned to me.

. Cleaned and artificially toned. Toning doesn't look natural.

"Original red" on and around the braid IMO may have been from something being on the coin in that area for some time protecting the surface, which since has been removed. With the reverse I'd like to see more of a chocolate brown and less of a pink toning that I'm seeing on the leaves. I'm feeling cleaned and has since re-toned. Let's wait and see how others feel.

This poor coin has been thru a lot. Cleaned/ unnatural toning.

Looks cleaned with the bright "fluorescent" retoning. Could have been trying to remove that fingerprint on the obverse.

I do not care for the eye appeal regardless of a possible cleaning.

This is a counterfeit coin!!! The 1841 design is of the Petite Head style, this is the later Mature Head variation of the Braided Hair design. Additionally, the date font and placing is horrendous.

Get your money back now!! And do more research before you spend additional money on coins.
