What's your take on this 1904-S Barber given the obverse side challenges? Would it grade 6, 8, or Details. If it were to get a 6 or 8, would the spots and the scratch reduce the desirability much or are things like that considered normal for the grade? -- Thanks, Dan.

I'd go with G06. Seeing it is a low mintage half I think the graders may give it a straight grade.

Westernsky...

I'm curious to your use of the word "barely" in your grading of this coin. I'm not challenging your grade, I'm just trying to learn the finer points of borderline grading.

I think that everyone probably knocked the coin back from a VG8 to a G-6 due to the obverse side shortcomings but you seem to feel a little more negative. Is there something you saw that others might have missed or is this just the normal variation in opinions? Do you see a higher than average of the coin being detailed? Thanks in advance for helping me understand more about how experienced graders evaluate coins. -- Dan

I think G-06 is the underlying grade.

For certain, I wouldn't let a TPG have a chance to call it a details coin. It shouldn't be detailed, but it could be a pricey roll of the dice for the coin's value. IMHO it's a bourse floor G-06, but I would expect some price haggling because of the scratches. If I'm a seller here, I'm emphasizing the circulation cameo as a tradeoff for the scratches. I don't think the carbon spots on the neck or the stains (rust from iron contact? organic crud?) are an issue for the grade.

It's a pesky date in any grade, and there's a collector who wants to fill that hole. Just take the time until that collector comes along and don't undersell the coin. It's decent for the grade. Not all details coins are equal. I'd snag this one any day over a holed or bent coin or a whizzed or brillo pad special.
