Hello everyone
Yesterday I had some bad news. I was going through my collection when I came across a batch of 1 cent dollars that I have that was deteriorating. Three months ago the coins were in good condition. I don't know what caused the coins to deteriorate so quickly. But in the midst of this sad situation, something strange happened. Some of the coins that I saved had their color changed, but they were still in good condition. Now I'm afraid of losing them. Does anyone know how I can stop the deterioration?

Gus, it looks to me like your cents are toning, perhaps due to exposure to the oils in your fingers and the environment. When in storage, do you keep your coins protected from humidity and air pollution? All of these cents are at least lightly circulated so I don't think that the surface toning is harming their condition.

I'm reviewing my collection and I took the coins to the service area where I have an office for work. Unfortunately, it's humid here and my wife and I use this area to smoke. There's also an orange juice factory nearby that releases a lot of steam into the air and the smell of oranges can be unbearable at times. It must be a bad environment for the coins, but I didn't think it could affect them so much.
I've already moved the remaining coins to a healtheir place. If they stay in this condition and don't deteriorate, I'll be more at ease.
Thanks, Spence.

First off, you will need to stop handling your coins with your bare fingers. get some nice white cotton gloves.
But that said, the environment you had the coins in was most likely the reason they toned out like that,

For storage, how exactly did you store them? in a coin folder or album? Or just had them gathered in a bag or something>

You need to wear gloves when handling coins. Stop handling them with your bare fingers. The oils from your fingers will cause them to tone from the oils reacting with the metal. Also store them in 2x2 if you haven't yet. They all look lightly circulated, so there's no premium over face value in that condition.

I disagree that gloves are necessary. They are not needed if you handle the coins by the edge. I do not like gloves, I have dropped too many important things while wearing gloves.

Thank you all for the advice and tips. I live in Brazil and unfortunately I don't have much contact with dollars. I'll have to look for someone who has them to replace them. Other coins were also affected. The exposure to the environment wasn't good. I noticed that the air here doesn't favor copper coins.
I inherited this collection from my father. For 25 years, they were kept in albums that deteriorated. Then they were put in wooden boxes where they are still today.

Other coins are having the same problem.

I will now store them in bags until I can buy proper coin protectors.

I buy my OJ at the Aldi. It is a store brand, says product of Brazil. Have to wonder if mine came from there.
