Easy! Dirt and debris can be rinsed off with water, a patina cannot.

Take it to the sink , hold it under running water, rub lightly with your fingers and see if it comes off. Appears to be a patina to me.

First of all I didn't like the coin, but I'm starting to like it, I believe it's patina too, its reddish brown color is winning me over.
