Is it worth the money to get a graded Gaudens or spend $150 or more on a graded one ? Heres a spectacular 1927 going for $3,713. My concern is expensive as they are they will never be cheaper and its been my dream to own a Gaudens. Another option is a 1928 MS64 for $3,484. While neither year is a stand out interest-wise does it really matter in the end ?

Do you mean "Raw" vs "Graded"

I found out that "random" meant 1908 No Motto, the commonest of the common. The 1927 and 1928 are common priced but better struck.

Quote: its been my dream to own a Gaudens Based on this sentiment, it seems like you should buy the best-stuck, best-preserved, slabbed one that you can find. Don't worry about spending a little extra money on a better coin. If you were just in it for the bullion value, then I think you would want to go down a different pathway.

If its just bullion I'd want then I'd go a different route. The graded 1800'somethings are hard to find.

I would find a specific coin rather than go the random date. Sounds like you want a nice collector coin, and you will get a low end for the grade (and many times lower eye appeal) coin when purchasing "random coin."

I would never purchase a random coin that I didn't have accurate pictures of the specific date and coin I was purchasing. Particularly with something at that price level You're going to end up with a common date that's low end for the grade if you're not careful.

My first Saint was a 1927 that I paid 70$ for in the early 1970's at a shop . I went for quality and went thru several hundred coins to pick the one I wanted. I wished I could have bought more but I was only making about $2.25 an hour at my "high tech" job. I still think back and laugh about it all.

Well I found the one I want. Its a 1908 MS65, but oh I see it has no motto. Heres another one but its a 1924 MS65, which is a bit late. I'd love a 1st year graded but you can't even find a 1907. The prices will make your eyes bleed in the $3,700 range for MS65. I dont have the cash in my account yet so I'm just looking.
Heres the thing. I know there was an original issue with the coin at its inception. Teddy Roosevelt didn't like the original high relief coins with no motto released in 1907 and the design was changed. I'm assuming ANY MS state 1907 will be out of my reach but did this no motto design extend into 1908 as well ?
So I guess I'm looking for a '08 or '09 MS64 or better coin. For the right coin I'll use the CC card and pay the extra.

Man these things are like Hens teeth. I'm finding MS64 and a lot of MS63 '08s and even an '07. A beautiful 1907 MS65 for $4,695 that aint gonna last long. A MS63 1908 for $3,300. And a whole lot of 1927's and random years and if I'm going to spend that kind of cash I'm sure as heck not going to buy a random year.

The only high mintage for the first three years were the '09 S's at 2,774,925 and the '08 P's at 4,271,551. Whew! These graded collectables of fairly low mintage's are going for a ton. I might have to settle for a higher mintage/Lesser value year and mint. Like this one. This is a nice coin. https://www.jmbullion.com/1928-20-s...n-pcgs-ms64/

Here are some more to browse through. They have 86 Saints right now. The side-by-side pictures are useful. I like that 1925 in 65+. https://northernnevadacoin.com/shop...t-gaudens-20I bought the best looking common MS66 they had a couple years ago, a 1927 stunner. It seemed like a lot then, but it's a whole lot more now. There's a slight bump to MS65, a bigger bump to MS66 and a huge jump to MS67.
