Walk2dwater - nice HSBC note there. I've always rather liked HK notes for some reason.

I "hear you" DaveL. I feel that Macau, HK & Singapore have produced some gorgeous banknote designs. These nation-states seem to merge ancient Asiatic symbolism (amidst vivid splashes of colour) with hints of a more industrial (&/or an imperial) past.

What an interesting contrast between the two portraits. The Hungarian lady looks aristocratic and hopeful while the Romanian gent appears sad and almost remorseful (like he's reflecting on the good old days).

There's no information on who the lady on the Hungarian banknote is, the Romanian man was a renowned Poet, Philosopher & Playwright in his country.
As an aside, there are 2 versions of the Hungarian 500 pengo banknote, on the back there is Russian script, one version of the note has a spelling error.

Interesting "Scots." Doing a little digging myself:
The Romanian poet is Lucian Blaga (& there is a version of the P107 note with an unusual BNR watermark). For the 500 Pengo (P117) the portrait of the lady first appears in 1923 on the 500,000 & 1,000,000 Korona notes (P79 & P80). Both 1923 high denomination Korona notes must be pretty uncommon as they command pretty high BV at $400 to $750USD (from lower to higher denom).
