https://www.ebay.com/itm/365241130426While variety hunting on ebay last week, I spotted this 1943-S/S. Last night, I was going to jump into the bidding, but the coin went for over $100. Clearly multiple bidders understood the variety and fought over the coin. I know the 1943-S/S is a popular Mercury dime variety, but I was put off by the marks on the cheek. Auction history on graded PCGS coins is thin, but MS65 examples seem to be in the $200-300 range. Also worth noting, I was hesitant to bid over $50 for the coin because I got burned on a 1942-D/D that our CCF grading pros graded as details: cleaned. Those pictures were also luminous and very enticing. Did I screw up by not diving on this coin? Or was it proper judgement to let it sail past? If someone were to slab and resell it, I don't see much meat on the bone at $112.

A rather attractive example, I must say.

A lovely example. Outside my comfort area though.

Agree this is a pass at that price.

Without the highly distracting marks on the cheek I could see this grading in the MS65 range.

The luster is off. I'd want better photos before dropping 3 bills. If it really is a nice coin, it looks like a no problem 64FB with a shot at 65.

It's a nice coin with a nice RPM, but it's too much money. Probably better that you passed on it.

Never look back - it is a nice coin but there will be others.

Quote: I'll make the argument.... it is the FS 501 & could pass for FB. Well, toots. Coin Rejector is right on that observation. Those bands are comparable to the other FB listings for 1943-S/S. I hadn't even considered that factor, but it's easily a 2x multiplier on the final graded price. I'd say that moves it much closer towards the "You messed up" territory. Probably just demonstrates the obvious, that I am far better at spotting varieties than I am at properly grading coins. Quote: The luster is off. I'd want better photos before dropping 3 bills. If it really is a nice coin, it looks like a no problem 64FB with a shot at 65. So for future reference, what's the right call here? If the seller offers returns, do you buy the coin aggressively at auction, evaluate in hand, and then possibly return if it's cleaned or low grade? Thinking like that bugs me. Is there an elegant way to handle the situation? Fully acknowledging that glamor pics sometimes hide glaring flaws on expensive coins.

Quote: Never look back - it is a nice coin but there will be others. I generally agree with the notion that you shouldn't dwell on regrets or missed opportunities. However, I am also a very strong believer in taking an objective look at mistakes (both potential and confirmed) with an eye towards learning and future improvement. As you said, there will be a next time. =)

That's a nice RPM FB Mercury dime, if not for the scratch on the cheek I'd grade at least a 65. A hundred dollars doesn't seem to be out of price range with today inflation with this variety, but can't tell if there's any other defect without seeing coin in hand, does seller offer return?

That particular seller accepts returns. Seller pays shipping, but that's no big deal.Their description text also says that the coin must be returned in their 2x2, unopened.

There's also a large ding in the right obverse field. I just don't see this at 65, luster aside.

FS 501 isn't particular rare, but one with FB is hard to come by. I'm not sure about if that's a ding on the obverse without checking.

I know this seller his photos and descriptions are upfront and true...I'd have pulled the trigger.
