FYI, I did total my V nickels... I'm at 786,160 coins searched now and my finds are:
1883 N/C: 1
1887: 1
1901: 1
1902: 3
1904: 1
1910: 1
1911: 1
1912-D:1

That's amazing, John77. We (my son and I) have only found 6 since 2016 (1883 NC, 1899, 1901, 1907, 1908, 1910)

Thanks, Aristarchus! FYI, 4 of those - 1901, 1902, 1911, 1912-D came from that crazy BofA roll from back on January 19th which also had 30 Buffalos, 3 Proofs, and a 1959-D. If you take that hoard out, I'm finding 1 about every 131,000 coins or 1 every 65 1/2 boxes.

1907
1908
1909
1910
1911 (4)

Very nice totals, Rackster! Do you know how many nickels you've searched total?

As for me, I've hit the CRH hard this week...

On Monday (12/4) I bought a total of 6,120 "unsearched" nickels from 6 different banks. I say "unsearched" because I got a "makeshift box" just as one of my branches closed... Long story short is there were 32 plain wrapped rolls in that box which had previously been searched - EVERY coin prior to 1990 (except a stray AU/BU 1982-D and a 1989-D) along with all of the 2009-dated coins (if there were any) had been removed! People usually save pre-60s of course... but pre-90s?

The story of my day was the 2009-D nickel... Last month I only found 26 2009-Ds in 23,160 coins searched - barely 1 per 900 coins... Well, Monday's batch produced a record EIGHTEEN of them! That's 1 every 340 coins! I also found the very hard to find 1990-D NO FS coin (only my 11th one CRH). And I found a pair of BU 1954 Philly coins in half a box of String&Son coins (would've gotten the rest of the box if they had been '55 Philly)... It was a very uneventful day otherwise, despite finding a total of 64 pre-60s, the only notable scarce date was a 48-S. And there was a lone War Nickel - my 50th 1943-P CRH.

Yesterday, I visited 6 different banks... I bought 3 boxes and 41 other rolls... 7640 coins total...

1st box had the same markings (11/21 - Roberto) as the nice box I got which had 33 pre-60s last week... Well, this box one upped it with 34 pre-60s including a 45-P and a 45-S along with 3 09-Ds!

The assorted 41 rolls had 15 pre-60s including a 43-P... and 2 09-Ds.

Box 2 (Roberto - 11/28) was a very slow starter. Only 1 pre-60 amongst the first 15 rolls. But the rest of the box was better, yielding 14 more pre-60s including a 1936 Buffalo and a 1958. It also had 6 09-Ds!

Box 3 (Roberto - 11/16) also started slow... only 5 pre-60s the first 20 rolls including a 45-S. It got much better after that... I found another 45-S (grade AU!), and a 42-D... 4th row of rolls produced a 43-S... the very last three rolls produced a 45-P and a 44-P! Yes, I found FIVE War Nickels in a box - which is my best ever! 19 pre-60s total and a single 09-D.

So my totals were 82 pre-60s including 8 War Nickels, a Buffalo, and 11 2009-Ds. Not a bad day's work. I have spent today recovering. LOL.

Nice John...lots of silver!

No clue on the number searched, but well below you and A123 (or David and a number of others). Really just the right place at the right time. If you go back through this thread, you will find at least 2 of the events where I found a litter of Buffalo and V nickels just a couple of months in between. I think one event produced 7 V nickels and 20 or so Buffalo. The other two events were 5 and 4 V nickels in a box each. I also recall on at least 3 occasions getting rolls and rolls of 60s nickels in BU. Clearly these are dumps of collections, so pay dirt is out there for us to find. I know that the two of you have pulled in solid rolls of vintage nickels...fun when it happens and exciting for all who CRH to see. I often wonder what I'm missing by not being as regular as you guys tend to be. But I also search for varieties, so my processing of a box/bag takes me quite a bit more time than you guys put in. Volume really helps, but I have my limits (space and time).

Thanks, Rackster!

Indeed you just have to be at the right place a the right time. I try to hit as many different banks as I can... and when I find a vein, I tend try to milk it dry... I believe I've only found one V nickel in a box (the 1883 N/C - Brinks box)... and only one other one in a MWR (1902 in a S&S roll). The other 8 were in CWR (4 in that one fortunate collection dump roll with the 30 Buffs and 3 proofs).

Tonight's been kind of cool. I've been going through my finds and upgrading some of my coins in my Dansco albums. Right now is a really good time to do it as the humidity is extremely low here. I'm actually working on an AU/BU set of Jeffersons - a lot of which is now comprised of coins I've found in circulation. I also finally took my XF/AU 1883 NC V and my AU 1928-S Buffalo out of their 2x2s and put them into my Nickels (1883-1983) Dansco.

Rackster and John77: You both are in a different league than me! Maybe someday I can work my way up.

We did many more rolls in 2016 than this year, but found more IHCs and V-nickels this year. Of the six V-nickels, 3 were in MWRs and 3 were in CWRs.

LOL, aristarchus. I'm just making the best of an opportunity. I'll be cracking the 800K searched barrier with my next batch of nickels. So I'll be 4/5 of the way to the goal of the thread.

A123 - I actually feel that you and John have been leading the way for the past year or so. Some terrific finds along the way! The key is putting yourself in the right spots and by doing the volumes has to surely improve the likelihood that you'll be in the right place at the right time.

Here's a CRH tip that I feel is real: around Christmas, folks cash in the piggybanks and change jugs for some extra spending money. My biggest lucky streaks have come just after Christmas, perhaps folks cashing in their coins to pay off some debt. I don't do the volumes like a number of folks here, but my guess is that if the big rollers act on this tip...they might strike pay dirt! When I hit, I ran back and bought up the boxes on hand. Once it worked...the other time it didn't. But I stick to my own bank, so I may have reduced the search because of that (and the pay dirt). But I'm thinking that I'll be buying a bag/box in the next week or so. And then through Spring, I'll grab a box or two every second week (my max limit on time).
2016 Objective - to establish a system to organize and catalog my expanding nickel and cent collection.
