Coin collecting is the only hobby in the world that you can spend all of your money and still have some left over.
I once attended an ANA convention where Walter Breen had a question and answer session. He told us something about a Numismatic Dictionary which he was writing. I don't know if he ever finished it before his death. Of the definitions he shared with us the one that stuck with me all these years was his definition for "numismatics". This one is maybe a little cynical. This is how I remember it:
Numismatics: A pursuit involving a veneer of scholarship hiding a core of greed.
I don't know if Walter ever finished this work, but I'm sure there would be lotsa good quotes in there!
Yes, I remember that he started the Q and A session with the statement that he'd answer any questions at all about coins...except...what are my coins worth!
If but for one second, you think you are better than someone else...for that one second you were worse than all...worthless as a tarnished cent lying alone in an empty parking lot!
Numismatics: A pursuit involving a veneer of scholarship hiding a core of greed.
Breen used to have a column in COINS called Bristles & Barbs. On the flip page was usually Carl Allenbaugh's Expertease. Breen I think really understood coin collectors but Allenbaugh understood why.
"Unfortunately, ideals are made of perfect principles but men are made of flaws." The late Carl Allenbaugh COINS magazine
"Paper [money] is a mortgage on wealth that does not exist, backed by a gun aimed at those who are expected to produce it."--Francisco d' Anconia Atlas Shrugged--Ayn Rand
