Mr. Taylor, what is your opinion of a possible switch from our current 70-point grading system to the currently conceptual 100-point grading system? Have ANACS personnel discussed it among themselves and what is the current in-house thinking? Do you see such a new system of any utility at this time or is the notion best left to as yet undeveloped computer-scanner machine graders?

I think we made a mistake many years ago when we didn't use a 100 point system. To many outsiders today, our 70 point scale seems odd and perhaps intimidating and, thereby, exclusionary. Having said that, I think it may be too late to change it now. No one has convinced me how it helps collectors and until they do, I will remain skeptical.

Sir,

Why not just give your customers a choice? Ask them if they wish
to have the 70 point grading scale applied, or your new beta 100
point scale.

Your comments please,
thanks.

Sounds too confusing to me to have two grading systems out there at the same time. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think I'm smart enought to handle two of them at the same time!!

I happened to attend a dinner where a panel of six numismatic experts pondered over this very issue, with an audience of nearly two hundred listening to their responses to six predetermined questions regarding the history and future of grading coins. Even without my numismatic experience I could see a very heavily weighted response toward sticking with the (albeit flawed) 70 point system when five of six panelists agreed it was better to stick to the old system, and only one audience member showed support for the 100 point system in a show of hands.

In short, if we do go to a 100 point system, it will be far down the road - we have many other issues to deal with first. Using today's technology to better handle the grading process, working on consistency issues across the board, etc. Changing the grading system at this stage of the game would be a mistake in my opinion.

Agree? Disagree? Why?

Personally, I think it would be a big mistake to go to a 100 point system.

It's difficult and controversial enough to distinguish between 68 and 69, can you imagine determining between 92 and 93?
