This might be an unusual thing to ask, but have you ever had the feeling when you were at a show or a shop that many numismatists just sort of have a "coin collector look" to them?

This is just an odd thought that I've had every so often.

Seems most collectors I see are pretty much average looking people. Only difference is we all share a "dark secret". We're coin geeks

I stand out at the local coin shows and coin meetings.

For one, I'm female. The average San Antonio Collector is male.
I'm on average about twenty years younger than San Antonio Collectors.
I don't wear vests to tuck my 60-coin holder into the breast pocket.

I try not to stand out at all at shows. I have a leather pouch on a belt under my shirt. That's where the goodies go. Also, I pull the greysheet out prior to getting to any tables. I'm 38 but don't look it. I get the "Can I help you young man" stuff all the time. I just tell em I am a beginner and just browsing.

Odd question. At a coin show most people look like coin collectors. At gun shows most people look like gun people. At jails most people look like criminals. At baseball games most people look like sports people.
Yes, I see your point. People do look like their passtimes.
HHHMMM. Now just what does a zoo visitor look like?
Could this be why so many people at dog shows look like their pets?
Natuarally you can always spot a Nuclear Plant worker. They have that certain glow about them.
In reality if I was to attempt to figure out what people are coin collectors on the street, I would just say everyone that looks old is a coin collector. Due to at coin shows probably 90% of all customers are old people.
Based on that I would guess the older the person, the more they collect coins. Then too, if really old, like a mummy in the museums, I would assume they are loaded with coins.

Yeah, lots of those guys up here too. I don't understand why the average collector think everyone wants to rob him.

I definitely see a trend of middle age guys with glasses and/or a spare tire at the shows. At 34, I'm usually one of the younger people at the shows. I'm also typically the only guy there with his 5 year-old in tow.

258 different coin issuing entities in my collection...and counting.

I knew everyone would think that this was an odd thought haha. Well, the reason why I bring it up is that often when I go to shows or to a dealer's shop for the first time, the dealer always asks me "So are you a collector?" I then respond, " Oh yes, I have been for many years now." And the dealer then replies "Really? You? I would never have thought that." This almost always occurs, so it made me ponder "just what does a coin collector look like?" I suppose that it is true that there are stereotypes, such as being an old Caucasian male.

I am a combination of all those, well, less the criminal part anyway. I wonder what the heck people say I look like.

I must have the "coin expert" look. (or maybe it's the 'fellow dealer' look ). I never get the 'hard-sell', and the dealers assume I know the basics about their entire inventory. My buying world coins (at times) might be helping this perception along... After all,
there's probably not too many people who walk in and buy coins like a 1966 Australia 50¢ piece and a 1979 Mexico 100-Peso...

I don't look like a coin collector at all.

I'm an athletic 19 year old sporting a military flat-top haircut and a gotee. I drive a motorcycle and enjoy heavy metal music.

Ha Ha, I'm a nice kid though even though I probably just described myself as a thug. The people in my coin club enjoy my company and most people there are nearing or over 50 years older then I am. With the exception of mycrob who actually belongs to the same coin club I belong to.

Wow... nice safe! My thousand dollar collection (in a Krugerrand and a maple and other accessories)is in a shoebox under my bed...

Anyways, I'm a heavily built 6'1" Chinese 17 year old who wears aviators all the time outdoors. I think if you met me in Chinatown or one of the rougher areas with Asian people, you would think I was a Chow Yunfat-esque triad member!

How many of these people "look like" coin collectors?

If a dealer is pre-judging his potential customers simply on their "looks", they're probably alienating and losing quite a lot of potential customers...

They all look like coin collectors. Every last one. That was actually a nice way to spend an hour this damp, foggy, cold morning.
