A few of us over on the other VAM site we have a thread about sellers making claims on there sales. This one is a good example of buyer beware. There is no premium on this VAM at all. I have 3 ofther and rob has 3 as well and John has 2. The thread is on the BST page and posted as Wow.
Anyway if you read some claim about how rare something is do some research! I am sure anyone here would give sound advice and is what this site is about

Russ there will always be some slouch who will try to play on the ignorance of the masses to find just "one sucker"... It's pathetic...and the guy with the man made scratches on his $80,000 Jesus(CROSS)coin is the same ploy...The FACT for this coin is its common so nobody wants to pay an additional fee just to get a VAM designation on a coin that has no ADDITIONAL VALUE its just waisting expenses....For example, some time ago a common MS64 Morgan was worth about say 65 bucks..and with todays rising submission fee's its darn near the value of the coin...Might as well leave it as a RAW COIN...More than likely they thought it would make an MS 65 grade so they submitted it and now there trying to weasel PROFIT from a common coin...BUYER BEWARE is right!...

Mike , an excellent comment, and Russ ..... for the people that might read such a thread as this, its because there are always many who will try to "PULL the WOOL" over our eye's....Represent something that could look like something BUT NOT BE what they represent...it takes the knowledge for anything one might collect, baseball cards, antiques ECT...I takes a learning curve to understand the essential points of any given field to know what is to be collected rather than its all collectible... Now you may want it as it winks at you...but you will never be able to get back what you paid for it.. This is the heart of the "ALWAYS ASK QUESTIONS"... I own half of the Golden State Bridge, if your intereted, I will Google up a REASONABLE Certificate of sale for you..LOL If you are interested in something ask around and get a broad field of view of the subject to understand if your getting a value for your purchase....That's why this site is here... for your questions...Thanks Russ for your Post and Mike, always for your reply..announcing just how important a subject like this is...I hope all will read it..It applies to everything...

I would say I own California but it's Bankrupted and someone would then try to collect something from me! Not to worry somebody will end up buying something like what this guy lists and get burned. Then just stop collecting, It hurts the market, as well as the buyer.

This thread is totally funny... not from the concept but from the posts of my friends... There will always be those who want to shank us..cheat us..and evermore...those like me and my friends who will speak out....Against those who try to cheat us from the lack of your knowledge...Thanks Mike and Russ...

Russ, Mike, Gene - This topic is always an EXCELLANT reminder to all. So much false advertising going on. I couldn't come up with anything about the land leading up to the bridge except, "I'm from the government and you all are delinquent on your taxes so I'm reposssing the land and the bridge" Jim

Hi Everyone, I'm new to the forum and to collecting coins. Like you mentioned above, I've been on eBay buying some coins (not too expensive). I wanted to know what the "P" stands for after the date: like one coin I bought is a 1879-P Morgan dollar. It says on the listing that it is Fine. I paid $46 for it (which I think was too much). My main purpose is to collect silver for it's value and then add a few nicer coins in. Another one is a 1888-S Morgan dollar (only paid $33 for this one). It does say I have 7 days to return them if I want. Would really appreciate your opinion. Thanks!

Dpartsch BEFORE you spend anymore money I would suggest you buy The Official Red Book A guide Book of US Coins. It will answer many of your questions and cause you to research more. Or, start googling US Coin History or any other title to produce countless results for you to read and learn. As for your P question, that should refer to the Mint in which the coin was minted. P is Philadelphia. However, the 1879 P Morgan silver dollar does not carry a mint mark.

The P mint mark is rarely seen on older minted coins. The war nickles come to mind as they have a P above the dome on the reverse of the coin on the silver nickels only

Thank you guys so much! I am going to get the book you suggested and start reading--before I buy any more coins. I just may send back the one I just bought. I don't mind paying about $33 for a coin of not much value (just for the silver content); But, for anything else, I am going to do some serious reading. In the meantime, I will keep reading your posts to learn more about collecting coins!

Another great Tool is stealing knowledge you don't know by listening to others and reviewing there resaons why they give a grade to a specific coin..such as can be found on the grading section of the forum...reading the books, studying what your trying to do will always be better for you....also review or save similar coins in your "MYEBAY" and see what they normally go for so you will have an idea of the value rather get caught up in the old bidding war syndrome,,,where you bid just to bid from impulse and not from knowledge...and to the forum...

aladinslamp - good point but I like to think I'm absorbing knowledge. I'm a new member spending most of my time on the Classic US Coin Grading side since when I last collected there was no TPG. I started to check out the VAM side when I submitted an 1879-CC for grading help & went to vamworld to do some research. Knowledge is key to making good decisions.

Knowledge is key, AND it has many facets, or sides of viewing...just like the old days when we had the redbook, supposed values(retail values for the buyers)and blue book when we wanted to sell them....there will always be a difference in pricing...TODAY we have another list to go by, the Grey sheet, the list dealers ask and bid between themselves...In all fairness someone has to hold a shop open and pay the over head for employee's and such...but the REDBOOK pricing is still "full retail" pricing you can't get back until sometime later..due to appreciation....10 20 years makes a difference..and also if the collector base increases as well.. therefore more people seek the same coins and prices rise, just like in the early 60's a BU common Morgan one could get for say $3 or $4 bucks.. today has increased significantly....The old saying "hind site is 20/20" has great meaning for those who have collected over the years and seen just how things have changed and why....Your same coin those many years ago would never bring such prices as it will today...That is why you need to know the many facets of not just the coin but its variety...!879-CC con in low grade is still costly for the many...a high grade such as yours Will undergo such scrutiny as its a very valuable coin...one must study and get to know all the facets to truly get the value it deserves...NEVER something to hurry and sell .. your going about it correctly...instead of scans you could or should get someone to take some really great shots of this coin...even if its not a new VAM the circle can agree upon a grade and from there you will have an understanding of the value range it can be....once again thanks for sharing such a beautiful coin one seldom see's...G
