Another coin from the box I found.

18.5mm in diameter and looks like brass; but incredibly thin (thickness of a thick piece of paper) and weighs 0.7gram. Don't think it's gold as it's quite dirty.

I can't get the date yet as I don't know the country and understand that different Islamic countries use different systems.

Thanks in advance,

Mike.

I think this coin is a Turkish, 1808 1/2 CEDID MAHMUDIYE, (ARABIC datre AH1223) KM# 644

Most were struck with a low content gold with no set composition, so they do look 'brassy' however numerous brass and base metal copies exist for this series.

Many thanks for the information mcs; there are so many Islamic coins about that it's sometimes difficult to identify them.

This is a "belly dancers' costume" imitation Ottoman coin. The tip off is the regnal year, 78. Neither Mahmud nor any other sultan has ruled this long. As for the content, I wouldn't expect any gold in it at all.

Thanks svslav; that would account for the hole in the coin then. I think I remember seeing pictures of belly dancers with strings of these around the waist.

Update.
Definitely not Gold. Did a test with the stone and 14ct acid. Dissolved in less than a second.
It's been mentioned that there were many fake ones around so probably one of those.

I wouldn't exactly call it a fake. As I pointed out earlier the regnal date is extremely bogus, so it was not intended to full people (who know). It just serves different purposes.
