Islamic coin indentification

MikeG Valued Member United Kingdom 128 Posts	Posted 02/21/2012 06:52 am Another coin from the box I found. 18.5mm in diameter and looks like brass; but incredibly thin (thickness of a thick piece of paper) and weighs 0.7gram. Don't think it's gold as it's quite dirty. I can't get the date yet as I don't know the country and understand that different Islamic countries use different systems. Thanks in advance, Mike. mcs New Member United Kingdom 35 Posts	Posted 02/21/2012 08:08 am I think this coin is a Turkish, 1808 1/2 CEDID MAHMUDIYE, (ARABIC datre AH1223) KM# 644 Most were struck with a low content gold with no set composition, so they do look 'brassy' however numerous brass and base metal copies exist for this series. Neither Mahmud nor any other sultan has ruled this long. As for the content, I wouldn't expect any gold in it at all. Send note to staff
