Quote: MezRDH at 28 Posts .....Good evening! I am having so much fun tonight going through my coins. I think I am officially obsessed You had the top of the Top experts (God's of copper coins) tell you that your coin is not real, Thus you still want to believe it is real. I also had coins that I thought are Real.

Great news!! I got my coin back. I was worried that I would never see it again. Grade N9. Comments: Not genuine. Struck copy. What a great experience! I learned a lot and hopefully made some online friends or not, that will help me in exploring my collection. Thanks for all the good and bad comments, it was a lot of fun. To me it is about the journey, the excitement and fun not the outcome. I have tons of really great coins, proofs, uncircs and commens but I enjoy going through the stuff I am unsure of. I want to learn. Again, thank you everyone.

Nothing surprising there...but I'm curious why you would trust a "company" over the best experts available ? Did you do any research on the TPG or just blindly believe that somehow they hire better people than the experts that gave you an answer ? I can tell you I've seen slabbed coins misattributed by all of the major TPG's...so I'm curious of your mindset.

I think you would be better off sending in the 1909 S VDB and 1914 D Lincoln cents next time around. I just hope that they were not in the same auction as the 1943 N9 cent. Perhaps your father bought the 1943 N9 knowing it was what it is and wanted it just as a novelty back in his travels.

I suppose that one gets a different take on anything by touching and seeing something in person. Computer photos verse in person grading. That was my thought process. If real, I think the coin would have been very important to any one's collection. I just felt like I owned it to my family to have all my options checked. I might think differently in the future with my other coins.

Thanks for the reply..and I'm not trying to beat you up..but keep in mind that if you sent the coin in with an attribution letter from either of the two experts that answered you, the TPG's would slab it using their attribution opinions. That would be the best way, as it is, you've gotten the opinion of a salaried, unknown attributer...although there was no chance to begin with...if there were, either one would request to see it in person.Either one offers in hand attributions for much less money...just no plastic slab.

Hind Sight is Always 20 20 I'm glad I was right this time. I'm sorry I have looked at coins for over thirty years and there is no way possible to know everything because of varieties. If a person asks he is at least intelligent enough to admit he or she doesn't know it all. Hats off to the person who took the chance and thanks it was fun and it was interesting.

Quote: I have looked at coins for over thirty years and there is no way possible to know everything because of varieties. Maybe so but it was a simple visual task to determine that this coin was a without a doubt a die struck counterfeit that was not convincingly made at all. However, the coin that 909records pictured on page 5 of this thread is scary

Probably sticks to a magnet so they don't need to submit it.

Some have asked about my images I use and I'm glad to say, I've completed an educational DVD of these. Ask if you are interested.

This thread reminds me of the time I posted a picture of a 3" coaster of an 1877 IHC. A couple ppl caught on pretty fast, but several debated it, graded it, said to send it in for TPG, etc. I proved my point, tho. There are experts (like Chuck and Mike) and there are Internet Experts, who are often believed even after the real experts point out the facts. How do Internet Experts get believed? A simple principle often used in logical argument: Point weak, pound the lectern!
