1978 kennedy half dollar s? Or d? S over d ? d over d?
Whats up with this coin? Partial missing clad layer? Whats the ghost y doing there? Whats with the R in liberty? I'm confused because A 1978 s kennedy half would have been a proof... Is this one heck of an impaired proof?..i took it into a coin shop, they said they couldnt tell either, said it could be a partial missing clad layer and an s/d . I dont know what to think?!

I don't know about the mint mark but it could just be a hit from another coin. It looks like crud on the coin to me. Maybe an acetone soak for it might help?
May you always have a clean shirt, a clear conscience, and enough coins in your pocket to buy a pint!

IMHO, environmental damage and the MM took a hit.

first off can you post some pictures of the whole coin both obverse and reverse. in some pictures it looks like a S mint mark but in others it looks like a D mint mark. I am thinking it could very well be a S over D error. but I am no expert just my humble opinion.

Looks like a D PMD. I highly doubt its a MM variety for this coin gone to heck and back. When MMs take hits it can look like all different kind of letters.

It is a 1978-D half dollar. A 1978-S is a proof coin. This one is not a proof coin. It is a circulation damaged coin. You can see the coin scratches in that area and one ends right on the mint mark.

Some have asked about my images I use and I've glad to say I've completed an educational DVD of these. Ask if you are interested.

This is a 1978D coin with a lot of damage, including the mintmark.
