This is not my coin but one I came across on eBay and did not win.

I'm just curious about the reverse image. I have never seen this before and cannot find it anywhere. It seems to be a two headed figure with a helmet shape like some man-headed bulls.

The inscription to left is TONOMOY I believe.

Any ideas?

I have not seen this exact coin, nor does the name ring any bells.
I'm a real newbie on Greeks, but the overall appearance looks somewhat Seleucid?

Interesting, could the full legend be ΑΝΤΙΟΞΕΩΝ ΜHΤΡΟΠΟΛΕΩΣ ΑΥΤΟΝΟΜΟΥ. I'm not sure but think the two heads could be an optical illusion, I think its possibly just a tripod.

I found this, its similar:

Your year looks like 'KI'.

This is closer still - note how it also does seem to have heads facing outwards

No mention in the description to this though.

It is a feature! "tripod surmounted by a bowl decorated with two male faces left and right" Pretty cool looking.

Another, clearer example:

Syria, Antioch AE17. Under Roman rule, ca 21 BC. Laureate head of Zeus right / ANTIOXEWN MHTPOPOLEWS AVTONOMOY, tripod surmounted by a bowl decorated with two male faces left and right, and surmounted by three loops with branches on each; caduceus at inner left. BMC 36.

Sorry to keep posting but everytime I hit return I find a better example

bobbyhelmet, may I ask where you found your example?
I've searched, even with the info from your example and still don't find it.

Although I did find another example on wildwinds of a different coin that appears to use the same reverse image. But no mention of it in the description.

Semi-autonomous coinage of Antioch ad Orontem, Syria. Turreted and veiled bust of Tyche right / ANTIOXEWN THS MHTROPOLEWS to right and left of tripod, date ZKS below, PK monogram on Delta in left field.

It was here Doucet, on the 'Syria, Antioch' Wildwinds page:

http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/gree...tioch/t.html

About 10% of the way down the page - or ctrl+f 'caduceus' and its the first hit.

The refs for my last two coins were 'RPC 4240ff' and 'RPC 4229.1'.

I must be going blind. That is the same page that had the semi-anonymous coin.

I'll give myself credit for at least getting the region correct.
Next time, I'll know where to look on the coin.

Indeed DVC, you had Seleucid pinned by eyesight from the beginning.

No doubt I'll find another odd coin to challenge you with in the near future. Maybe from the local coin show I'll be going to this weekend.
