It is probably a re processed cent and the zinc plating enhanced the die wear. Not the overall size of the devices are not affected, just in the direction of the die wear.

I saw this and also thought it was a replate. But I have a very hard time telling anymore. I only recently learned about replating after I found what appeared to be 100 ms zincs in a bag full of circulated coins. I was so happy then really sad

I have a small collection of reprocessed cents.
I show them to people as an example of how not to get
taken on buying what they may think is an MS coin.
Some are very good jobs and there are also different hues
visible on different coins that I have. From silvery to bluish. Obvious ones show the bad plating job all around
and most of the coins have wear anyway so it looks odd.
The key is the outer edge of the rim. I believe the coin stock was zinc. plated before the blanks were punched thus
when cut a very small amount of the plating was removed in the process so after a while the elements got to the edges
and started the rust process. Very minute but you can see it even on an MS steely with a loupe and sometimes just in hand.

The coin in question looks kosher but it is not
a DD. Just original plating issues.

Thanks for the quick replies. I wasn't aware of plated 43's (other than copper to pawn as a real). Heck... according to eBay I should be rich with all the machine doubled/ deteriorated coins I have that are "eBay Double Dies" (because on eBay they aren't [Doubled - just double] LOL) - too bad I have a conscience

Kosher meaning NOT re-plated? Wrong. This coin is badly re-plated. Nothing about its surface is original.

That's not a doubled die either. The 9 of the date on your coin has a hit that makes it look fat.

Coppercoins, That is the the same thing that I initially thought until I saw this image (overlayed in grey) from LCR here http://www.lincolncentresource.com/...943ddo1.html I'm still learning so I could be mistaken, but the images look identical to me.  |

I agree with coppercoins, it is not a match. The tail of your 9 has been flattened so it kinda-sorta looks similar but notice that your 1 does not have the doubling at the bottom and LIBERTY is too thin. This coin is a Class 6 DDO so it will not have the distinctive notching found on the other classes of doubled dies, the primary diagnostic is extra thickness on the periphery of the coin. |

So if I understand this correctly the Lonz 1943 is a DDO just not one of the ones that are well known? I see notching and separation lines am I seeing things or what? Happy Hunting!

I'm not sure how I could be clearer. The coin posted is NOT a doubled die at all. It is a badly corroded, worn, damaged coin.
