I found this coin metal detecting. The dirt has been rinsed off but thats the only cleaning I've done. I know it looks like two different coins in the pics but I assure you it isnt. Bad flash or something. So what do you guys think she will grade at? and if it's worth what I think it is how do I go about insuring it to send off to the grader?

Okay, here is the bottom line. You have a coin that is potentially worth thousands of dollars. This is a very significant date in ANY CC series. Do not mess with it any furthur.
I would suggest NCS restoration services for this coin. They won't remove the corrosion obviously, but the unwanted ground patina, yes.

BTW, looks to have been an AU coin before buried.

It's probably not real. If it were, with that level of detail, it would be worth nearly $30,000. One (1) 1870-CC Half exists in MS and a only a few in AU. This AU50 sold for $26,000 last winter on Heritage: http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?hdnJu...3243&x=0&y=0It's worth checking out on the million to one chance it is real. I can understand your doubt. Hard to believe I just found this huh? But I find it hard to believe that a fake would be buried in a field that as far as I know has been a field since 1850. I might also add that this isn't the first coin iv'e found there. I've also dug numerous indian head cents, an 1827 Large cent, and an 1868 2 cent piece, Now unless every one of those is a fake then I highly doubt the CC is.

The rims look suspect. It's not just the rarity but the appearance and condition. It does not look like a coin that spent 100+ years in the ground.
Registered Mail can be insured for up to $25k and for under $100 total you can have it expertly examined. That's what I would do after confirming the weight is 12.5 grams and the diameter is 30.6mm. You may have the numismatic find of the century.

BTW, if this coin was found out West, the condition could be very accurate.
Very dry desert soil would not accelerate the corrosion process.

Okay some more info. I just weighed it on a digital scale. It weighs 12.4 grams. I measure with a pair of verniers. It measured 1.206 inches. converted to metriv thats 30.6324 millimeters. I really dont think thjis is a fake. Oh and beleive this: coins can survive very well in the ground. Particularly silver and gold.

Yep, that size/weight put it "in range" and the rims could be a bit odd from a striking issue when minted. Here's a high-res photo of a genuine AU. I'd send it to ANACS if you don't have a major dealer within driving range.  |

Diagnostics look good to me. I agree with BH1964, ANACS would be a good choice to authenticate.

Wow :-) I cannot believe what I am seeing.
I'm not seeing any reason to doubt it's authenticity off the bat except for that date's inherent rarity.
The detail's all there. I don't know about the reeding from that series, so I have no basis to judge it by.
Yes, get it authenticated. Emphatically.

I have to say that given my knowledge on seated halves, if this one is a fake, it was done incredibly well. I concur with the rest. This coin needs to be authenticated by a TPG ASAP. If real, the value would be in the tens of thousands. |
