I just bought a cheap one (don't recall price) at my local Harbor Freight. I use it to weight 1982 Cents, and a few other times.

I got mine there too, for around $10-$15. It weighs to the nearest tenth of a gram so it should be sufficient for most coin weighing applications.

Check ebay, got mine for around $6 shipped. If you want a better one it should weight to .00 mine is .0

I got a really great one from my local harbor freight it goes to the thousands place (1.32) I used the 20% off coupon that comes every sunday and got it for under $20.

I found one on ebay. It is okay goes into the .00 range...

Ebay has many to choose from, for less than $10, including postage.
My criteria:
ought to go to 0.01 grams - that becomes important when examining gold or silver coins;
upto 50 grams, better 100g - very few coins exceed 50g;
uses AA or AAA batteries - much less expensive than "button" or "coin" batteries.

How does one verify that these inexpensive scales are accurate?

you can buy accurate weights at some stores (i.e. 5 grams, 10 grams, ...) They are pre-measured to a specific weight to make sure that your scale is on
