1966 Jefferson gouge or?

It is what remains of the detail at the end half of Jefferson's ponytail. The die must be filled with some kind of debris or packed grease.

Yeah, it's part of the pony tail detail. The rest of the detail was polished off the die.

I looked at the other tails and they do not seem to be as enlarged as this one but that could be because the rest was polished off. Like an eye trick.

I find your nickel interesting but it looks a lot like this one I have from that time frame. I don't think it is anything more than lacking detail for some reason.



Here is a fairly normal die state.
