Hello, first time posting. This forum looks great. Hoping I can get a hand at an approximate grade for this coin I recently acquired.

Gorgeous coin! AU piece, not MS due to minor wear on obverse leaves and light wear on a few feathers on the obverse

Tips of feathers look sharp even though diamonds are a little weak. CN was a hard metal to strike so sometimes details were not that good. The obverse appears to have a scratch on Indian which would bother me and a hit on the rim into I of united. Color also seems off, but might be from lighting used for the photo. It also looks like it has been cleaned.
All that said, AU-55 details.

Well thank you all. I bought it off eBay for about $50. Was hoping it might grade to a mint state but it sounds like I paid about the right price. It is a very nice looking coin in person, I think the lighting on the picture they took isn't too flatering. It does seem that these early IHCs that were copper/nickel frequently have a pretty week strike with the diamonds and even Liberty. At least from the pictures I've been able to find through a google search.

When I saw this coin earlier today I didn't comment because I though it might a soft strike MS coin
based on the stellar state of the rims and fields. I have seen slabbed specimens of the CuNi IHC's
that look like this one graded MS, but I don't feel qualified to give an opinion. Also I'm not sure of the color
although my gut tells me it's not cleaned. Very nice any way you look at it.

Tbone I think you did good at the $50 price. I paid $45 for an 1862 not near as nice as this one.

I am not completely sure about the surfaces. It could possibly be around a high AU.

Just wondering... is that a 'die crack' I am seeing on the reverse at the 10 o'clock position?

I'm not familiar with "die cracks" so I'm not sure. These pictures are the ones from the eBay auction. I do have the coin but I don't have a good way to take a high res picture or even to take a good close look at it myself. I have a nice quality loupe on it's way to me though and I plan to give this coin a good look over when it arrives.
