I have very little experience with Liberty Nickels so I'm hoping I can get an approximate grade on this one I just grabbed off eBay. I'd also appreciate any pointers as to what to look for in grading these Liberties. My 11 year old son and and I are starting a folder and will likely be hitting the lower grades but would like to do my best to get some value.

Thanks.

Hard to get an accutrate grade from the grainy pictures, but I'd say it looks about AU.

I'm new to this, but I agree with above. Liberty is r, date is prominent, hair lines are visible. There is a chip on the left side rim though. Not sure if that hurts it at all.

Possibly AU details. It may be the pictures but the coin looks pitted.

You'll need clean photos to get an approximate grade. Not sure if it's the photo or a coin that has some heavy pitting and has been cleaned.

Hasn't arrived yet so hopefully it's just a fuzzy picture. I only paid $7 for it so I figured it was worth the risk.

Thanks everyone for the information.

We truly would enjoy helping ... but the pixelated images are not doing the true surfaces of this coin any justice (we hope).

Snap a few of your own photos when it arrives and post them ... we are capable of grading Liberty nickels and will offer our honest views.

There are plenty of resources available to support your learning ... I suspect a google search will yield some answers .. there are also plenty of fine reference books out there.

I can personally recommended Grading Coins by Photographs by Q. David Bowers ... you can find it on-line for under $15. Great visual reference.

Tbone, is this the photo that the seller used to sell that coin? Based on the price you paid and the amount of detail in the coin, I would almost bet the coin has heavy pitting. Please post a good photo when it arrives so that we can get a good look at it.

My guess- Coin was dropped on the ground early in it's life (before it was worn),
became pitted, was found, cleaned and sold. Good coin for a father/son album.

In my humble opinion and without having the coin in hand, I would say the coin appears to have damaged surfaces: Whether from environmental damage or cleaning... but I certainly hope this is not the case.

It is the picture that was used to sell it on eBay. I'll post my own picture when it arrives.
