Well it seems like my family ( wife's side included ) is dropping like flies this year!

Yesterday we said goodbye to my wife's grandmother ( mother's side ) and laid her to rest beside her husband.

Once the funeral was over, my mother-in-law approached me during the little after-meeting when they serve those little sandwiches.
She told me that she had been going through her mom's things and found an old cigarette case ( made of sterling silver ) that was full of old coins.
Turns out her father had served in WW2 and collected various coins and bills while he was overseas.

She couldn't think of any blood relatives who collected coins and decided that instead of selling them, she would be giving them to me later this week at the Winnipeg Folk Fest t-shirt meeting ( I'm a supervisor for the festival ).

-note- she believes one of the coins is gold but isn't sure. She also mentioned there was an old british coin that was the only coin that was wrapped in plastic..she said she didn't take it out of the plastic but was able to see it was from the 1800's

--edit-- I will be posting pictures once I acquire the coins as I'm sure I will have no idea what half of them are since I mainly collect Canadian coins and most of them are european

Interested in seeing what was passed along through the family tree.

My condolences on your loss of family member(s).

Sorry for your loss. On a brighter note; You'll have something that she considered very dear to remember her by. If you have little ones, this may be the time to get them started in collecting w/ some of Grandma's coins.

Sorry for your loss. It is nice, however, that the coins left behind are staying in the family.

If you can get information about who collected the coins and the circumstances, I would really encourage you to write it down, even if only on some on-line scrapbook and include photos.

I write that because my husband and I have recently lost many relatives and I have a house and a storage locker full of stuff that clearly meant something to someone but we'll never know where some of these things came from.
It wasn't that long ago when I thought that 'mint error' meant that something was wrong with my candy.

I agree.

Her wanting to kept it in the family says a lot about her. Here choosing to give them to you says a lot about you.

My condolences to you and your family. Being 62, I recently started cataloging my coins so my nephews and niece know what they are. My directive is, "Hold them til you're 60." They're 8, 10, 16 and 26 (other sibling's daughter). Figure they may have greater value then. But they will be in the family, as are yours, to do as they wish.
