... The more that things change, the more that things
remain the same!

I have just discovered, thanks to ValiantKnight, that the URBS ROMA coin
with the She Wolf nursing Romulus and Remus was a commemorative issue.

It got me to thinking ...

Date: The early first half of the third century AD
Place: Major cities within the Roman Empire
Event: A notice is posted in the local forums.
...

Hail Roman Citizens!

In anticipation of the 1100th anniversary of the founding of Rome,
and the anticipated dedication of the new capital in Constantinople,
the Imperial Mint is pleased to announce the minting of Commemorative Coins.

Struck in pure base metal with a layer of PURE COPPER and guaranteed to weigh
at least a third of a real coin, you can fool your friends and confound your slaves.

These special issues will feature the image of Romulus and Remus suckling
the She Wolf and the Head of Rome wearing a helmet and carrying a spear
over her head. Note: The Imperial Mint reserves the right to substitute
images of soldiers, horses, wreaths or whatever dies we might have on hand.

Mintage is strictly limited to the number of orders that we receive. Or maybe
whatever strikes our fancy. Hey, you pays your money and you takes your chances!

Orders strictly limited to five coins per customer, but if you order within the next
two or three years or so you may order as many as you want. The cost is only
one silver denarius apiece. BUT WAIT! There's much, much more!

Order 100 pieces and you will also receive a slave to carry your commemoratives
with pomp and extravagance. (Training of slave is two denaria extra.)

Delivery is expected to be sometime within 3 months and 10 years
depending upon your distance from the capital. Also, but not limited to,
Acts of the gods such as storms, border uprisings or theft from our
underpaid delivery slaves are beyond our control. So we cannot refund
your money under any circumstances.

Our fortune tellers, having read the entrails of several chickens, agree
that in the future these commemoratives will be the talk of something
called the "CCF". While we cannot guarantee that this will happen, we
CAN guarantee that we will make a ton of money with this offer.

So do not hesitate! ORDER TODAY!

...

Coin collecting is fun, so do not take it too seriously!

I would go for those but I'm really waiting for the cave men commemoratives. I hear the hesitation on their issuance is due to lack of a real cave person to model for the obverse.

- surely "fora" !

"the anticipated dedication of the new capital in Constantinople,"
- has potential for a double issue, by the Imperial Mints of the Eastern and Western Empires.

In case anyone is wondering, here is the type of coin matthewvincent is referring to:

Minted in Rome BTW; also minted at several different cities across the empire.
"A poor Roman plays the Goth, a rich Goth the Roman." - Theodoric, King of the Ostrogoths

Attributed coins in my collection so far - Roman: 179, Byzantine: 9, Post-Roman Germanic: 8
