GentleCoinPeople,
My error find of the day. Coin missing detail on obverse, reverse normal. Has faded inprint of multiple types of same year 1974D pennies. Most of same size 7 as in obverse date, part of E. PLURIBUS UNUM, ect. Should this be sent in to grade as an error coin?
Thank you Al

Very common, struck with a grease-clogged die.

Most of the pennies in this roll have faint lettering and designs all over them. Lettering on Lincoln's forehead, "LIBERTY" in the upper left field, upside down "G" below "GOD" ect. Grease clogging wouldn't produce all that would it?

Best I can do showing background images on 74D penny. Note what 1st looks like an "S" above 4 in date is "UM" from UNUM. Column design from memorial is above that. Letters in front of 1 in date, there all over coin.

You need to invest in a couple of books and start reading. The coins you are posting are NOT error coins. there are several sites online which help in identifying errors and varieties. I suggest you check them out.You can also search this site for past posts. This link has several. http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...IC_ID=123151The first responder John1 on that thread lists 13 of them. and here is one for photographing http://www.sigma-2.com/camerajim/cjgcoins.htm

I agree with papatony...study errors and varieties a bit...and remember, you usually have to go through thousands and thousands of coins to find something collectible.I look through about 5,000 a week and sometimes find nothing at all.

So what your saying is a coin that has what's supposed to be what's on the reverse all over the obverse of the coin that's not an error. I can see it's not a variety as cataloged, but I've looked at 1000's of coins and never seen this.
The article about photography reminds me of my High School photography class. Wounderful if you have a camera. I guess scans aren't good enough to show detail. Again I collect coins, not trying to sell. I can groom my Shetland Sheepdogs so they win in the showring, but it really doesn't change the dog. Guess you can photograph the coin to make it sell, but it's really the same coin when the buyer gets it.
I think there's a difference between collectable and sellable. Like the ever widening gap between what's right and what's legal.
Sorry I bothered you all.

Took some of these coins into town to a dealer. He said looks like a multi-clash die.

I think what we're saying is we cannot see anything on the pics provided and what you describe may be a clash or it may be PMD such as two pennies smashed together. We cannot give you answers based on vague descriptions. The advice on books a sound one and will get you much further along if you want to learn...it was not meant as an insult.

Quote: Again I collect coins, not trying to sell we are trying to help. but if you want to see things on the coins you keep , so be it. It has nothing to do with taking a picture for sale of the coin, but for the proper identification of possible errors or varieties.

The marks you speak do not show in the pics you posted. The description of the reverse design on the obverse sounds more like damage than a clash because with a clash the "unum" would be on the lower part of the bust not above the date. Are the marks raised or recessed?

Amida, I never make Mistrakes Albert, If you do a search on this forum you will find a lot of useful info as well as pics. of what die clashed coins should look like. Then with you actually having the coin in hand you have a better idea as to if yours is a clash or not. One member on here actually has and posts some nice overlay pics. of different coins to show both the Obv. and Rev. and where to look for die clash areas on both.
