I happened to run across this one on eBay a few days ago:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...271027324981
Here are the pics from the auction:

The starting bid was $129.99, and I ended up being the only (and winning) bidder. I'm assuming the relatively high starting bid turned off any other potential bidders, but it's also possible everybody else just noticed major problems with this coin that I didn't see. The toning seems a bit odd, and it may very well have been cleaned, but given the amount of detail showing it still seems a bargain at that price (NumisMedia lists a VF20 at $180 and an XF40 at $450).
Obviously, I'll have to wait until I get it in hand to tell for sure, but what do you think? Any major warning flags? Do you think it's even genuine?
FYI, here's the one I currently own and am trying to upgrade:

Appears to be F12 - F15 at most......you paid about average price. Appears to be scratches and PMD around date area.

Are you looking at the example in the eBay auction or my current specimen that I included for comparison?

barry . . nice upgrade. I would say high VF details - definitely been cleaned and the scratch through the cap. Nice die cracks 5:00 obv and 9:00 rev. Also between "O" and "F" down through the shield - appears to be die crack, not a scratch.

Thanks, Jeff. This one is destined for my 7070 album, but I was just concerned that there was some obviously major flaw that I just wasn't seeing (or that it was a fake). I don't mind cleaned coins for my 7070 as long as the details are there.

It has great detail and should be a nice up grade for you. It remains a hole in my album and I would be proud to have your new one in that hole.

I would avoid any coin for sale with a photo that has been doctored the way that one has. You won't end up with a bargain, only a headache.

It's a nice coin that has an old cleaning but still has very nice detail and will fill that 7070 hole quite well. A lot of the Capped Bust coins were cleaned at some point long ago when cleaning coins was not considered a no no. Ed ANA LM-3175

Sooo....
The general consensus seems to be that it is a nice, albeit cleaned, example (which is perfectly suitable for my 7070 album). Do y'all think that $129 was a decent enough price to pay?
Once I get the coin in hand, of course, I will post better pics...

To me that is a $129 gamble that I would not be willing to take.

Quote: To me that is a $129 gamble that I would not be willing to take. Yup, gotcha. Maybe that's why I was the only bidder. Sometimes, though, you need to take a gamble to get a good deal, and I can afford to gamble $129. Again, though, keep in mind that I bought this strictly as an upgrade for my 7070 album, where I prize details above anything else (well, other than authenticity, of course). If I were buying it as an investment, I doubt I would have taken the chance.

Yeah, but 4 ounces of silver would look pretty strange in my 7070 album, doncha think?

It's a gamble, but there is no way of knowing whether is was a good one or not until you see it in hand. The only things I can say from those pictures is that it is a B-2 which is an R-2 coins and that it will look nothing like the auction images.

A strong VF for a reasonable price. The die breaks are interesting, a plus in my book. Enjoy!

It appears to be cleaned with around VF-30/35 details. Just checking online, a few of these have sold for around $110.
