ID Of This Claudius II Bronze? - Coin Community Forum

Archraz Pillar of the Community United States 3499 Posts	Posted 05/24/2013 7:02 pm Although I can tell from the obverse lettering that this coin is a radiate of Claudius II, the mint mark is off the flan on the reverse. Ben Pillar of the Community United Kingdom 4208 Posts	Posted 05/24/2013 7:22 pm Firstly, its a radiate coin - it refers to the fancy spiky 'radiate' crown. Its the hat Sol (the sun god) wore. Secondly, its FIDES EXERCI - I have this exact type. It shows Fides holding two military standards and means 'Loyalty of the Army'. Heres an example with full legend: Report this Post to the Staff

The visible C before CLAVDIVS and the legend break FIDE-S EXERCI allow it to be fully attributed: Claudius, Antoninianus, Rome, 19.5mm, 2.88g. IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from the back / FIDES EXERCI, Fides standing left, head left, holding vertical standard and transverse standard. RIC V-1, 34 corr. and var ("Fides head right" and bust type); Sear 11334 var (ditto). Report this Post to the Staff
