I thought that the slab was to protect a coin from this? Especially a new coin. I have a 2007 Silver Eagle in an ANACS holder and it appears to be toning or what looks like a burn mark like toning that is on the edge of the coin and is bleeding into the coin. On the obverse it is located from 5 o clock to 1 o clock going in a clockwise way and on the reverse it is the entire edge and most noticeable from 6 to 11 o clock. Are the coin holders supposed to protect a coin from toning or it doesn't matter that it is in a slab, it will still tone anyway on a such a new coin like this?

most slabs are not air proof so if they are in an environment that would cause toning they will still tone unless they are in some kind of air tight storage area or maybe even the covers that you can put on the slabs that hinder toning. The slabs do protect the coins from scratches and such but not from the environment, they are sonicly sealed to prevent switching the coin and such things like that but they are not water nor air tight, this is how people gas coins in slabs to make them tone more rapidly

Also if there was some type of contaminant present on the edge of the coin it can still react with the air and whatever water vapor may have been captured inside the slab when it was sealed. So yes coins can still tone inside of the slab. The early NGC slabs are known for this with silver coins reacting to outgassing from the label. If you ever have a chance to look at roosevelt dimes in the first five NGC slab generations you will see that almost all of them have a nice rainbow tone on them at the point where the coin is closest to the label and the tone is stronger on the obv than the reverse because that side is closer to the label. But from the NGC 6 slab on after they started the keyed insert (that groove in the center insert between the coin and label.) that toning almost completely disappears. (Probably many of the ones seen in the later holders are crackouts from the early ones.)

I got this silver eagle as a promotion for signing up for the PCGS collector club. It was brilliant when I got it. I placed the slab in a closed plastic container and added hydrogen sulfide gas. Within maybe a week of exposure the coin was mostly covered with brownish-purple tone. Unfortunately, it wasn't really an improvement!

This experiment unfortunately didn't produce a beautifully (but artificially) toned coin, but it sure proved that PCGS slabs don't prevent toning!
