Half dollars haven't really circulated much since the 1970's. (With the exception of casino usage) They usually tend to sit in somebodys piggybank or in a bank vault! Roll searchers are ordering boxes of halves from their bank and reintroducing half dollars to the neighborhood banks. Also with the economy the way it is, people are breaking into their piggybanks and turning in their halves for paper money at their local bank (which is good for you). This is why you find so many Bu and Au 1970's half dollars. Just today I found alot of BU 1971's in my quest for silver! As to the little slip of paper the other poster was talking about...I don't know. I make it a habit of buying every half dollar I find, even if they are in the teller tray and I can see they are not silver! I can later take them to my dump bank and for at least a little while they are out of my searching areas! Also you may notice that some tellers pull silver and put it aside for themselves. You may get lucky and stop in when she's on vacation or something and get her stash! LOL My best haul ever was when "Special K" was on vacation and another teller was more than happy to give me the 19 rolls of half dollars she was saving!

thank you for clearing that up. With that said, should I keep the BU and AU that I find or dump them back? I am still partial to the hand rolled halves, because so far I have found nothing in the yellow wrappers. I now have them all sorted and am ready to dig. I really wish there was a comprehensive list somewhere that had all the half errors that have ever been found, but I have yet to find it in one place. I bought that book striking it rich in pocket change as it does list quite a few error coins in one easy place. But if you know of another place I would love to know. back I go to searching. I am so hooked it is a blast. I am still very happy because I found a 1936d 3 1/2 leg buffalo! Not in my halves, it was one of my Dad's

If it were me, I would buy an album and start building a set! I would then keep 1 or 2 Bu examples of each year (or more depending on the mintage figures). As to the hand rolled halves...they are a potential goldmine! or a potential letdown! Keep in mind that every person that roll searches half dollars has to have a "dump bank" or 2 or 3! There are people here ordering boxes or 2 or 3 or 10 a week! These have to be unloaded somewhere! I try to get the teller to tell me haw many rolls they have...If it is a huge amount, then it is highly likely somebodys dump bank! I will buy 5 or 10 rolls and go outside and run through them quick! Today was the first time I ever got silver in a suspected dump bank! I bought 5 rolls and 1 silver clad was on the end of the roll! (I've run into this before and went back and got everything they had and got skunked! I figure somebody was one short for a roll so put a cheaper silver clad on the end) I went around to other banks and didn't find tons of junk, so I went back and gambled on the other 35 rolls! I really didn't expect much out of them (especially when I walked back into the same puny credit union and she asked me if I wanted to exchange my 5 rolls for another 5, that's when I learned somebody else had been doing that) I got lucky and the previous searcher missed one very good roll! and a couple ok rolls!

I know that I would check each of the earlier Kennedy halves for doubled dies. There are many to be found on the ones dated from 1971 thru 1977, from either mint. IN GOD WE TRUST is usually the best place to find the more dramatic doubled dies.

Just don't confuse Machine Doubling for die doubling!
