Made a little deposit today into my kid's account through the drive-up window at around 4:30. Was making a little time with the teller and so I figured I'd ask if she had any loose halves I could buy from her. This is our dump bank, that's why I opened Joey's account, there. Thus, I usually don't ask for coin, there. Anyway, she says, "Naw, sorry." The bank manager overhears us talking, though, and comes over, and says, "Ya collect dollars, too? One of the tellers has 42 silver dollars we could sell you." Trying to maintain my composure, I just nod in the affirmative. I'm to pick them up, tomorrow, around my lunch break, because the teller who had them had gone home at 4:00, and locked her drawer. I'll let y'all know tomorrow night about all the "silver dollars" I get. Hell, a guy can hope, can't he? Besides, I deserve some luck like that, I've really been on a bad streak of late...

Yesterday while I was running errands, I stopped at a number of banks along the way asking for halves. After coming up empty, the 7th or 8th bank had about $15 worth. As the teller was counting out the halves, I couldn't help but noticing that one of them was a proof. The teller also noticed it and concluded that it was "brand spanking new". The proof was dated 1987. Now I can say I have a half dollar from every single year going back to 1956.
The day didn't end there. After going through the rest of the halves and setting aside some nicer ones to possibly swap into my album, I went to a branch of a bank where I have an account to dump the remaining halves. When I got there, the coin sorting machine was jambed on account of another man who tried to dump too much change at once. Next to his pile of change on the dump tray were 3 half dollars of his. I talked him into selling me the 3 halves, all of which were 40%. These felt like some great finds after searching 6-7 banks without luck.
It didn't end there. An architectural firm which I recently worked as a temp for about a month called asking me to come back in for a day to help them meet a project deadline. What a great way to end the day.
(I've been an out-of-work architect during a majority of this recession, making a living delivering pizza and flowers)

Has anyone had success cold calling banks? I figure that driving around to 10 or 15 banks is time consuming and costs gas money. Sitting down with a phone list and calling banks asking them to put the halves aside for you if you come in in an hour or so might be productive.

Gothic, yes, to call before hand I find is very helpful.
I usually call around in the morning to a couple of banks.

Several tellers have put aside rolls for me in the past.
I give them my name and approximate time of picking them up.
I also ask for the name of the teller I'm speaking with.
Works great!

Then on the way or going home I might swing by a couple more!

Went through two boxes this morning. First contained a 40% and a 2006d. The second was much much better and I scored 30 40%'s, 3 64's which one was BU, 3 franklins (60d, a BU 62, and a AU 63d), and 10 walkers!! (46, 6 43, 43d, 43s, 42) as well as a swiss 5 franc coin (worth a little less than $5 under the current rate).

My box today was better than yesterdays. 51S, 63D holed, 67, 68D-4, 88S proof
02P, 05P-7, 06P-8. eight Customer wrapped rolls yielded a 1964, 65, 67-2 and a 1969D. I ran back to this bank and bought the rest (19 rolls). Nothing!

Speaking of coin wrappers..I was wondering if when anybody else finds the old customer wrapper yellowish brown looking ones how your finds have been? I have been finding a good pile of them lately and in the last few months found the majority of my silver in these types of rolls. Can anybody else relate to this?
