At the Long Beach Coin Show, they had an exhibit of the gold recovered from the side wheel steamship, the S.S. Central America which sank off the coast of the Carolinas in 1857. The exhibit was fantastic with the motherload of all bars recovered, a Kellogg & Humbert 933.94 oz. bar that had a value of $17,433.57 in 1857! They also had approximately 100 1857-S Double Eagles fused together in a clump as found (they recovered 5,200 Double Eagles from the wreck) I took pictures with my cell phone but can't seem to upload them to share
I'm still trying. Anyway, they had a 49'er special at the show which included a History Channel DVD, Red Book signed by the head of the expedition team, and some nuggets recovered from the wreck. Being a recreational gold prospector, I had to have this. I'll see if I can get those pictures up soon

Great fun ..... and nice score on the 'historical' nuggets.

I've read few articles about that ship ..... imagine being the team to find all that treasure!

Looking forward to your cell-phone pics if you can figure them out.

Thanks David. Yeah, I know. Can you imagine seeing the first pictures of the sea floor. The first thing they found was the ships bell followed by the sidewheel. They knew at that point what they had. From a Numismatic standpoint, this has to be one of the most incredible finds next to the Atocha. If you havn't already, check this out:
