Anyone planning on attending this month's Royal Canadian Numismatic Convention/Auction in Saint John, N.B.?

I think there are upwards of 3400 lots in the catalog. My budget runs a lot shorter than my want
list on this one. There are some really great, truly scarce coins in (somewhat) affordable collector
grades.

WOW, what a weekend it's been at the Torex Auction. I placed bids on at least 20 coins and only won four??? Almost felt as if I got beat up! The following are my four wins:
>I.C.C.S., 1911, quarter, MS-64
>I.C.C.S., 1899, quarter, MS-62
>I.C.C.S., 1960, half dollar, MS-65
>I.C.C.S., 1914, half dollar, AU-58

Almost every coin sold, many at basement bargain prices realizing only 50% or less in trend value. As a result I believe we may see a major price reduction in trends for Canadian decimal in the next year or so. Sign of the time I guess. Let me know if you picked up anything at Torex, please list the pieces.

You've got some nice coins! And you're right on trends. They must accurately reflect real market conditions. Trends have softened for many circulated coins. It's time for an across-the-board adjustment.

I wish I'd brought more money at Torex. There were a lot of good deals.

Not everything sold - my two coins didn't sell because I set a reserve. I won't "give" stuff away. I can afford to hold it indefinetly.

t_y: Are you setting up a table?
Also, for Torex auctions (and others), do you need to register yourself with ID or just show up with money? I've never been to an auction before.

1. I am not setting up a table. Brian Smith invited me to exhibit coins - just as a "side dish" for the public. If it goes the same way it went the last time, there will be good lights and some friendly chairs, so collectors would have a place to relax a bit, look at coins and chat

2. Auction is outside the bourse - you do not have to pay the entrance to TOREX. As any other auction you must register: credit card or valid references if you are a first time bidder; fill the form and get your bidder number (you bid by raising the card). Only after registering you will be allowed to see the lots.

Auction is a great experience but remember:

1. on top of your bid you will pay tax and the buyer's premium - include that when deciding how much you will bid

2. DON'T, and I repeat DON'T bid based on the catalog description - look at the lot first

3. just like when you go to a casino: know before hand how much you are willing to spend - STICK TO IT - it is very easy to be carried away

4. opening bids are in general 50% catalog estimate and most lots go for 80 to 120 the estimate

5. my main trick to know if I am bidding right - dealers are there to make money - if you get the coin for just one advance over the dealers' bid I am OK, otherwise I am fighting another collector and may end up paying way too much

I hope this helps

For the ones going, have a great time .
I keep the money to buy the coins instead of expenses for hotels, meals and entertainment.i know I miss the excitement but I always end up with some of the coins I bid on.Sure you do not see the coins in your hands but there is a return privilege that I exercice when I see fit.
I yet to see a dealer not refunding my money after my explanations as of why I am returning the coins. They know as much as I do the true value of the coins not the holders.
