Okay, so after I picked up my 1924 Peace Dollar, and 1963 Franklin Silver Half, I stopped by one of my coin haunts to see if they had anything new I would be interested in.

This place has an antique display they call the Half Off Box, and I nearly fell over backwards when I saw upwards of 50, Kennedy Proofs in cardboard 2x2 holders, various years including the Bicentenials, going back as far as 1969.

Looks like someone cracked open some proof sets and placed the Kennedys in 2x2s, and the shop is offering them at half price.

Going back tomorrow to really search these good as I didn't have time to day. I'll post a list of any I pick up at bargain price.

You didn't mention the prices after the half off or are they all different?

I know I'll find one in this roll!

They vary from $5 - $10, so anywhere from $2.50 - $5 after the half off.

I'm going down there tomorrow and will search them more closely, I just didn't have the time to do it today(imagine a coin collector not having time to search through half off proofs).

Seems like a pretty decent deal as long as they are not impaired. I'm building out a full set of Kennedys and I'm being very picky on the proofs. I've seen lots in half off boxes that have a couple of spots on them. I've passed on them and tried to only buy gems even if it means paying extra. In the long run I will be more satisfied with the higher grade coins.

Cent: 1917
Two Cents: 1867
Nickel: 1916
Dime: 1957
Quarter: 1964
Half: 1917

Ok I am back from my coin haunt and this is what I picked up in Kennedy Halves:

1967 (Red Book has 67 Kennedys in MS-63 only but this coin looks PF to me)Asking $15; Paid $7
1968-S PF Asking $9; Paid $4.50; Red Book $7
1969-S PF Asking $9; Paid $4.50; Red Book $7
1970-S PF Asking $12; Paid $6; Red Book $15
1971-S PF Asking $4; Paid $2; Red Book $6
1973-S PF Asking $3; Paid $1.50; Red Book $5
1974-S PF Asking $4; Paid $2; Red Book $6
1976-S PF Silver Clad Asking $7; Paid $3.50; Red Book $8
1977-S PF Asking $4; Paid $2; Red Book $6
1978-S PF Asking $3; Paid $1.50; Red Book $5

Total Asking Price was $69.00

Total I Paid was 34.50 plus tax.

And there are many more of these down there. All PF condition. Some idiot inherited their grandfathers proof sets, cracked them open and took the Kennedy's out and placed them in cardboard 2x2's.

Proof is not a condition...it means the coin was minted using a particular process. Dies are polished to a mirror surface, and the coins are struck more than once. But my real point is just because a coin is a proof doesn't necessarily make it more valuable, and the grade of the coin matters.

No proofs where minted in 1967. SMS (special mint set) coins were minted from 1965-67; business strike coins that were handled more carefully. Yes, if an SMS coin is still in great condition, it does look nice.

I have to get solid coin holders for these. I don't trust the cardboard 2x2's, especially since one has a tear in the cellophane on the obverse and I don't any of them getting scratches.

I was having a hard time not drooling while searching. I still can't believe it.

Once I put these into hard coin holders, I'll get the pics done.

my local coin shop sells the 1970"s mint " proof for $5 , 69 for $3.75, 68 for $3.5, and the 64 for $8

I would pick out a couple that look really nice with no flaws.If you can get some to grade 67 or above IMO it's worth the cost of grading.

I know I'll find one in this roll!

To get a MS67, you might want take a gander at your halves under at least 5x magnification.

They are not worth grading unless you can pull down a PF70 grade...and the chances of that are not very good. You can pick up slabbed PF-69 Kennedy's on ebay for less than the cost of having these graded, and you'd have 2 of each coin.
