I see rolls of wheaties (sometimes stacked high piles) with an Indian Head cent showing on one end for auction on ebay...usually running 6-12 dollars; also BU wheaties showing on each end, supposedly an "unknown year"...I bought two different on a lark just to see what I got.

I got what was described, but nothing of value inbetween the two ends, fact is I wound up overpaying somewhat...

Question: Has anyone ever found anything worthwile in one of the such rolls that would cause them to buy more? I think I have written them off as gimmicks, don't know if the found old wrappers to put them in or what but won't take anymore chances in the future.

just wanted to know if others experience is the same or not.

Those shotgun rolls are seeded on the ends to make you want them more so you will pay more for them. What are the odds that a seller will have 100 shot gun rolls that have IHC's, Flying eagles, 1909's and so on and so on each and every roll? The rolls them selves are probably unsearched but I would be willing to bet that the hoard from whence they came was looked at thoroughly by experienced searchers.

Well, after reading this I think I will just save myself the money, as I was always debating on giving it a shot with a couple rolls just to see what I end up getting. Thanks for the Post

I clicked on one of these the other night, and then clicked on the sellers other items for sale. They had over 100 more rolls, all with the same two years of IHC's on either end.

I sent them a message asking how long it took to load all of those rolls with those two common IHC's.

No reply.

I once saw a shotgun roll on eBay with a G-4 1877 Indian showing. The bidding went crazy of course. The bidding went quite a ways over what a G4 1877 is worth. Who knows what the reverse looked like or whether or not it was even authentic. I'm sure the seller packed the middle with a bunch of junk.

I saw another one that had the reverse of an Indian showing. It had the "S" mintmark. I'm thinking this seller likely bought an 08-S Indian and put it on the end with the reverse out. This seller then gushed with a bunch of hype of the possibility of it being a much more rare 09-S. Of course the bidding went well over what an 08-S would be worth.

What a scam! I stay away from all those "newly discovered" and "unsearched" rolls from Grandpa's hoard. LOL!

here is a good one if any of you want to use it in the future as a reference its hilarious and sad he swindled a lot of people. Please note that the caps are from the original ad. I have just posted it here so that the CCf members are aware of the modus operandi and are not duped. spelling mistakes are also part of the original listing.

****ORIGINAL LISTINGS WENT WELL, I HAVE TIME TO LIST MORE****
I HAVE LISTEDTHE LAST 3 ROLLS THAT I HAVE
BID WITH CONFIDENCE JUST CHECK MY FEEDBACK FOR PREVIOUS ROLLS SOLD
LINCOLN WHEAT PENNY ROLL
THIS ROLL IS UNSEARCHED BY ME AND CONTAINS A 1909 VDB CENT ON ONE END
I WAS AT AN ESTATE SALE AND BOUGHT A BOX OF SO CALLED JUNK (ACCORDING TO MY WIFE) THAT WAS AVDERTISED AS "THE KITCHEN JUNK DRAWER BOX"
THERE WAS 19 POUNDS OF MISC. SMALL HAND TOOLS, LOOSE NUTS, BOLTS, KEYCHAINS, OLD TRADING STAMPS AND THE LIST GOES ON AND ON. AFTER DIGGING TO THE BOTTOM I CAME ACROSS SEVERAL ROLLS OF WHEAT PENNIES (10 TO BE EXACT). WITH MYSELF NOT BEING THE COIN COLLECTING PERSON I DECIDED TO OFFER THEM FOR SALE ON EBAY. I DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT WHEAT PENNIES EXCEPT THAT 1909 WAS THE FIRST YEAR MADE. I DID SOME CHECKING AND SEEN THAT THE ONES WITH THE VDB MARK ARE WORTH CONSIDERABLY MORE. SO HERE I AM LISTING THEM. I CAN ONLY GUARANTEE THAT THERE WILL BE AT LEAST 1 COIN WITH THE VDB MARK THAT CAN BE SEEN ON THE END OF THE ROLL. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE OTHERS ARE AND WILL LEAVE THAT UP TO THE WINNING BIDDER.
FOR YOUR PEACE OF MIND AND MINE THIS ROLL WILL BE SHIPPED IN A BUBBLE MAILER WITH DELIVERY CONFIRMATION NUMBER

Very good point, as every LWC has been around 50+ years...and passing through many hands already. So, unless those wheats have been sealed in an attic since 1920, expect them to be thoroughly searched.

I was poking around ebay and noticed all these "unsearched" rolls with interesting coins showing and was going to start a thread about this very same subject. It got me to thinking why on earth would anyone..... especially a coin or antique dealer.... would sell a roll without looking through it first. I've bought a lot of coins off ebay, but I would be leery about buying what is described as an unsearched roll.
