I Agree - not original. Distressed fake. While on the subject of fakes I found this pretty good article recently. I didn't buy it. As Bobbyhelmet and others know, I'm sorely in the market for a Caligula denarius. When I saw this, I was tempted until I took a closer look. My emotions tried to get the better of me, but I was able to control myself. I think the auction ends today around two hours from now. Thanks to everyone helping me keep from doing something stupid.

That's a good article, especially the section describing stylistic conventions between ancient and modern artists. I got 9/9 too...I thought the fakes were rather obvious?

One of the most important defences is that one gets a 'gut feeling' that a coin just ain't right.
Usually, when that happens experience tells you so. With just pictures to go on, it comes down to style.
Judging an ancient coin on stylistic grounds is probably the most important defensive weapon against fakes. For this weapon to be most effective experience is essential.
Most usually but not always, a combination of similar opinions is effective in the detection of fakes.
I have not mentioned a range of other diagnostic tools, but opinions on style, when it comes to ancients, are important.
Nobody has mentioned stylistic grounds for identifying this coin as a fake. Nevertheless that is exactly what has happened.
The antiquarians and scholars of old, relied more on style than any other factor on which to base their opinions.
I agree with the opinions that were expressed before mine. I think it is a fake.
