A friend of mine and fellow collector had his father pass away recently, been helping them handle the estate and the large volume of coins in it. They decided to keep all the gold but wanted it all slabbed up for safe keeping but before I sent it all off to CAC I decided to see what I cold do to help them out as a lot of them had either PVC residue, surface gunk or a film from who knows what on them, needless to say I think it turned out REALLY well on some of them. This one in particular was the most drastic by far but they all improved by a TON across the board. Some of them were kinda beyond help, one of the Saint Gaudens $20s had developed black chickenpox all over the reverse and I really can't do anything about that, but PVC, hazing and assorted gunk? That I can. Used a combo of distilled water, 100% acetone, verdicare and a solution of 66% ez-est and 33% water (I don't like using the uncut stuff on gold, leaves that weird overdipped look to me) Edited by GrapeCollects 09/01/2025 1:12 pm

Sorry for the late replies! Been busy lately, got this one back from CAC and wasn't shocked to see it now landing in a MS-61 holder, though the 120v I ate at work today was shocking! Quote: What would you estimate is the number of coins in this "large volume" ? Counting ALL of them including the ASEs? Thousands. Just the coins of numismatic interest? Dozens.

Great job with the conservation and grade. It really does look nicer. Seeing as how you had a shocking lunch at work, should we call you "Sparky" now? (Plugging in the microwave?)
