Bad news for those of us who buy from abroad.

People I've spoke with are seeing tariffs on coins from abroad, but some inconsistency in rates.

Definitely bad news for those of us who pursue coins rarely available within the US.

I imagine tides will turn at some point, so I suppose a bit of saving now for future opportunities isn't so bad.

I also wonder how competitive non-US auctions will be if a majority of Americans opt out... PRs might not come down in lockstep, but what a US winner pays may not be as much as it would otherwise (at least ex-forex).

Oh, and my preferred "not from concentrate" OJ is a product of Brazil. I am sure the brand will switch to Florida OJ, which is, IMHO, an inferior product.

They can't. There is not enough orange production in Florida any more due to citrus greening disease. So we are all stuck with the prices (my brand jumped from $4.29 to 4.99 for a 59 oz. carton).

I like samoth's argument about decreases in U.S. collector demand potentially producing bargains. I will be on the lookout.
But you also have to take into account that since inauguration day the dollar has weakened by over 10% vis-a-vis the euro. With the tariff impact that makes buying coins priced in euros 25% more expensive than last year.

What an unbelievable gong show regarding tariffs and
de minimis .
I am waiting to hear anything new about how the S show
is all going to happen on August 29 th .
Seems no one in the current US administration understands
how hard this will be to administer and enforce .
The USPS and the CBP do not have enough manpower
to even remotely enforce this .
The American public does not seem to comprehend
that TARRIFS are a TAX on them , not the exporting country!
There is a real simple way of doing things properly like the entire rest of the world . a VAT or GST .
Trouble is the political party that implemented one ,would
not be reelected for Donkeys years .

So lets go with this thought for a moment - Since I quoted you, Pacificoin, lets just use Canada.
So lets say that a company in Canada wants to transport their goods to a US buyer, that buyer has to pay an X amount of tariffs to the US Govt to get them across the border. then that buyer will be forced to increase the price they sell it at to get back that money. THEN, a local merchant that bought from the buyer above had to pay more for that 'thing' and puts it on their shelves for sale at an increased price. When a local consumer comes in to purchase that item, they are paying a higher price (thus paying a portion of said tariff) AND since the sale price is higher, they pay more is sales tax too (thus paying twice for tax on an imported goods. and THAT tax, where does it go? right BACK to the Government - so the consumer is paying twice for tax, and the Gov't is collecting twice on that very same tax.

But if the US is charging a tariff against, lets say Canada, but Canada does not have to pay it, why are they all up in arms about it? the US citizens should be.

Now, my example is showing goods Entering the US not exiting.
does this process work both directions?

or am I WAY off base?

in my mind, tariffs, only purpose is to make a country produce and buy goods locally more - which in most cases is just impossible.

Yeah, mine went up, too. Still Brazilian. I go through two cartons a week. That is just me, the wife and kid do not like it. Yes, I drink a lot of OJ.

Because distributors are less likely to buy Canadian products if products from another country (with lower tariffs) or cheaper domestic products are available. Now Canadian producers must choose to sell less product, lower prices, seek other markets, go out of business, etc.

Correct. That is a more acceptable (but still debatable) reason for tariffs, to "level the field" via intervention. For example, we put tariffs on cheap Japanese cars to make them cost the same (or more) than the more expensive domestic produced cars. But today, tariffs are being abused by a serial abuser.

Jbuck ,
You said it all with your last comment !
Hopefully some common sense and sanity
regarding trade prevails .
Although given the current situation, I for one
am quite doubtful.
As a coin seller , where the margins are quite thin
to start with will not be paying any upfront tariffs
to the US government.
Just found out a few minutes ago that US collectors coins sold from a
foreign country (ie Canada) back into the USA will as of August 29 , 2025
Will be subject to a DUTY of 10 per cent .
This , even though the GATT and USMCA both have zero rates!
Wake the heck up America ! What the current administration is doing
is imposing a stealth National Sales Tax with out saying so!

So, my first tariff era overseas purchase experiment/experience.

I didn't follow the auction broadly enough to get a sense for whether there were any bargains based on lower demand. On the one better lot that I won, my competitor was another American (I hope nobody here), and the price wound up around where I expected, certainly not lower.

A couple of lots I bid on and lost were due to avid competition from Italian collector(s). A very rare mint with no examples at auction since 2021, so no way to guess how the prices would go.

The first jolt which I more or less expected is that the shipping price jumped 50 euros from the same time in 2024. That's due to abandoning the normal postal services and switching to couriers (had I done more due diligence, I could have confirmed that in advance, but I expected it). On, say, a $1500 order that's just a penalty of few percent, but my order was (clears throat) quite a bit lower.

Oh, and since the dollar is on the decline, each euro cost 8% more.

Will see what happens as it hits US customs.

Thanks for the update, TDZ!

There hasn't been much of interest to me at all the last couple quarters, so I haven't had an opportunity to make any purchases.

Please keep us updated!
