Poll Question
Preferred CRH denomination seems to get discussed with some regularity. I'm sure this subject has been polled in the past, but who doesn't enjoy a "which coin is best" debate? What is your favorite United States denomination for coin roll hunting, and why?

My answer to this question is Jefferson nickels. Some reasons why I think the humble nickel is the best denomination for CRH: The coins are durable, and you can still easily obtain 1938+ nickels. Nickels are pretty much the only coin where you can still routinely pluck silver from circulation. I average a War Nickel per $30-40 FV searched. There is a profusion of minor DDRs for modern nickels. They tend to be much larger than for other denominations, and are easy to search systematically and fast. And now some shade on other denominations: Cents smell and are often dirty. Zinc cents are frequently damaged. Dimes are too tiny to search comfortably. The crazy number of quarter designs makes it a headache to search for errors and minor varieties. Due to silver getting pulled, the dimes, quarters and halves are limited to 1965+. Cents are limited to 1959+ due to folks filtering out wheat cents. Therefore, I think we must conclude that nickels are best! =)

When I roll hunted around 30 years ago, it was the half dollars, followed by cents. That is because they are what were most frequently deposited in the bank where my girlfriend worked. I did get others at times, but the bulk came from those two. I did not get boxes, I did not even know that was a thing until I had stopped. If I were to start again, nickels would be a good choice. So are quarters. Not for profit, but the ability to build sets.

I voted nickels. IMO they are the only currently circulating coin where one can aspire to collect the entire business strike set at face value by CRH. Yes it takes a while - 328,000 nickels searched in my case. But - it did provide me an opportunity to develop my CCF name.
Take a look at my other hobby ... http://www.jk-dk.artToo many hobbies .... too much work .... not enough time.

Nickels for all the above mentioned reasons (plus Buffalo & V nickels can still show up in rolls). I like halves for the possibility of hitting an old timer's dump.

It varies. These days it's quarters and nickels. Very focused on cents for several years prior.

I have to say cents because of All the possibilities in the errors and verity's. Funny no one has said Dimes just not much to find on dimes . I check them for silver and if no silver away they go. Happy hunting.

I did the majority of cents and nickels. Found quite a few War Nickels in CWR's.

Alright, you probably already know what I voted for.... Cents are so readily available, at least right now, and the price is right. My next favorite denomination is Morgan dollars but cannot put myself on the chain for $600 bucks/plus for a roll of 20 anymore but would love to. I will have to agree with everything you said about nickels, and I have searched several rolls and like them. Much like cents, they have trails, clashes, DDO's/DDR's, RPM's and so much more and yes, they are MUCH cleaner, the cents I have been getting lately would appear to come out of the gutter or worse. So, I can eventually see me moving much more towards your nickels, it makecents and I really do like them. Thanks for the thread, Brand!

I'd say cents in my opinion, because they're the cheapest to get and most people hate cents. Lots of varieties and errors can be found easily for cheap.
Errers and Varietys.

I started out with cents and now have moved up to quarters. I still pick-up a box of cents about every other month (cheap) and then stack them in the closet so in my retirement I'll have a nice supply. Nickels are nice because they are clean like stated above but being on the west coast not many Denver varieties or errors. I like quarters because I have a majority of DDO's/ddr's memorized plus the chance of a W and although slim a chance for silver.

Cents because I am pulling the 95 pct coppers.
I think we will have cents around for quite a while, makecents.
I expect people to slowly bring them in and if there is no alloy recovery program, it should make good hunting for us.

I always preferred half dollars and dollars when hunting in the US, back when you could still find them at banks. Once in a blue moon they have them now, but the silver has mostly been cherry-picked.
In New Zealand by far the coin with the best potential for flaws/errors is the one dollar coin.

I recently moved to the small dollar coins. Why?...I don't know! I have mixed feeling about it. It's more expensive. There seems to be some good quality things out there worth finding. Less collectors might be searching them. You never (at least, I never), see them in circulation. Banks don't want them, they want to get rid of them! If you find a bank that has them and wants to get rid of them, make sure tell them YOU WILL NOT BRING THEM BACK! Rolls? Loose? Boxes?...Boxes are real expensive!
Does this post make sense? I don't know. What do you think?

@Marc: I've been out of the US a while now, but I always enjoyed going through rolls of dollars of whatever size I could get (mostly not Eisenhowers for whatever reason), then spending them when shopping. I'd love to see the dollar bill retired. It does my head in a bit how literally billions of dollar coins have been made, but no one will use them. I have a theory on that, but this is a family site. Let's just say coins don't stay in a g-string well. I can't think of any other real reason, except the symbolic value of the dollar bill.
I've had people look sideways at any type of half or dollar coin and question whether or not it's even money.
I have found some interesting pieces, whether San Fran mint stuff in circulation, frosted proofs, etc. Definitely worth the hunt.
