Picked this one out of the circ box this week. An easy one to spot, but this is the late die state coin, not as desirable as the EDS coin. Nonetheless, for 18 dollars....SOLD. I believe it to be a VAM 3, any other opinions appreciated.

I I, VAM 3 is the early die state. Can't really tell from the pictures. The diagonal line appears to touch both sides of the MM. If it is flush with the top of the MM, VAM 3. If below the top of MM, VAM 4. If diagonal line does not touch both inside lines of MM, VAM 5.

I believe it is the VAM 4. The S is too complete to be the VAM 5. I think I see the remains of "freckles" between the eagles legs. This is an indicator of the VAM 4. Check for die file lines in her ear for verification on the VAM 4. If there are none, check for die file lines in her hair beneath her ear, then it's VAM 3.

It is hard to tell if it is flush or recessed since the coin is a bit worn. It does have the hair die scratches on the obverse and the pitting on the eagle reverse. The die scratches in the ear are not the same on my coin as the VAM 4, and I know it's not VAM 5 because the S is not broken... So I have to go with VAM 3. Thanks MorgansRmine. The thing that got me was the ear die scratches, mine has some very apparent scratches, but not the same as the VAMworld pic, I am going to scope this one and see if the O/S is recessed and get some pics of those scratches.

NGiles, that threw me at first too, but after I read more carefully I saw that the pitting was mentioned for the VAM 3 also, that's why I am leaning that way. Thanks for your input.

Good call infiniteInterest. The die file marks in the hair would be the more definitive attribute of the variety. If they are there I would say VAM 3 as well. Nice find! $100.00+ coin for only $18.00. I'm jealous.

I don't know if the LDS (late die state ) coins carry that much of a premium in circulated condition NGiles, but I figure it's worth more than I paid for it- Bonus ! And it's only worth 100 bucks if I sell it, and I am not known for selling my precious coins. By the time this coin leaves my hands , the populations will be known and it'll be worth melt.... I am going to have to look at some auctions and see what they are going for.
