Hi

Could someone please give me the correct info as far
as silver % etc. on the 1769-1969 Cal. bicent. bear - obv.
the golden land - rev. medallion. I have an UNC. one (near perfect)
in a nicer holder. It gem scale weighed in at 1 oz. exactly.
The info I read about it was varied. .900, .999 silver as well as
it being just silver plated. ?
Even it was .999 and it weighed an Oz. would that not still be less
than 1 Oz. of silver considering the addition of any other filler when
it was minted/struck if any thing was added at all. Never mind on that last part. I weighed it as 1 Oz. AVOIR. not Troy.
Thanks.

Well...I guess it's a bit of a specialty commen.
I'm more interested in what it commemorates, because in 1769, California was squarely under the rule of Spain.
The Bear Flag Revolt didn't happen in Sonoma until 1846, statehood in 1850.
In other words...

Look under the paw of the bear- MACO is Medallic Art Company, the manufacturer. 1769 is the date of the establishment of the first Spanish Franciscan mission in California, specifically in San Diego. This mission was the first permanent European settlement in California.

OK, gotcha...that was the date Junipero Serra established the first Spanish mission--but they didn't use that bear.
Still think they were digging for a "bicentennial" event back in '69. Apologies for being a stickler, but here in CA one sees so many hokey tourist items.

You will probably have to contact MACO directly and they should be able to provide the composition to you. Since it is an older medal, that info would probably not be on the website.
