Went to the bank today and the got $100 of 5c coins. When I got home and poured them onto the table I noticed there wasn't a single coin dated later than 1998. These bags must've been sitting at the bank for a fair while. I was pretty excited as I thought I wold probably have heaps better chances of finding 1972 coins and I was right. I ended up finding 9 which betters my record of 4 in $100 by more than double 
On a similar note. Since monday I've looked through $400 of 5c and excluding today's finds I got 5 1972 coins, 3 of which have heaps of crap on them and one of which I actually put back in the pond because it is so bad. Why is it all the good years have crud on them  Edited by enworb

Well, you've done better than me....not a single 1972 in the $100 I went through. And have just now gone through $500 of $1 coins and all I got was 3 2005 Kangaroos!  |

But in a hundred years it would not be worth much money unless they are in vf to un condition. Good luck though.

They are "The" key date in the 5 cents and they only cost 5 cents to keep, I would be keeping all I could find

I sell most of the ones I find. I either put them in sets or sell them individually or in groups. I have never got less than $5 each, even for crappy ones. One of the 9 I found would grade gEF-aUNC and I might keep that one.

I would consider weighing the cost of how long it takes to sift through $100 worth of 5 cent pieces or 2000 individual coins. It's gotta take quite a bit of time. If you're panning through 2000 coins in an hour & picking up 4 coins...then realistically, you're getting paid $19.80 (after you take the 4 x 5c pieces out) per hour. Then again pull out the big guns...what do you guys consider to be the best coins to currently hunt in our change?  The 2000 $1/10c Mule is a gold-mine if you come across one. I think the 2001 Centenary of federation upsets are a good value coin. Examples generally go for $15 each ( http://www.ebay.com/csc/i.html?_nkw...md=1&_ipg=50) Cuds sell for a few dollars each depending on the coin ( http://www.ebay.com/csc/Coins-/1111...3286.c0.m283) I admit, I am powerless over $50 notes - to the point that my life has become unmanageable because of this addiction. $100 takes a bit less than an hour. I enjoy it. I dont do it just for the money - that is a nice bonus.
I think the best thing to hope for in change is the 1966 wavy 20c. A 2000 mule or incuse 50c would be amogst the best after that.

Takes me much longer than that.
I look for nice "early heads" coins, a quick look at both sides for any errors (eg missing features or rim cuds or maybe the elusive "2 headed 2007") and thats about it.

I dont bother with errors unless they stand out at first glimpse. I usually put $10 on the table spread them out and then flip them all so the obverse is facing up. Then I gather every coin with the old bust and only check those. Im sure it wouod take much longer if I started looking for things other than the 1972. I have recently been keeping stats on every year I find and it can take ages.

There are so many different errors between the few.

I found one in $90 of 5c. Happy with that :-) Only the second on ethat I have ever found

Between wednesday and friday of this week I searched $1100 of 5c coins. My eyes hate me now. I found 12 1972 5c, 2 of which are buggered. This exercise just went to show how noodling is all luck. I found none in the first $200 and then 4 in the next $100. After that it was pretty much 1 per $100 which is pretty crappy. If you had of only got the first $200 and stopped you would believe it was impossible to find a 1972. If you only got the next $100 you would think it was easier. Sometimes im in love with noodling, other times it gets the better of me |

I've looked through a couple of hundred dollars and found nothing  . It can be pretty soul destroying, but then you find something nice and all is good with the world

I also keep my eyes pealed for a 2007 5 cent double header  . They are bringing more at auction than the 2000 / 10 cent mules. |
