Hey that is very cool! I have a similar story...
I got into chess heavily in college. I come back for Christmas, and after dinner I was given a present by my Grandfather to open in front of everyone. The box contained a very beautiful handmade chess board. My uncle Rob, a master wood worker, jumps out of his chair and takes the board right out of my hands. He says, "I can't believe it!"
We say, "What?"
He says, "I made this board 27 years ago and sold it at a flea market in Dallas."
My Grandpa says, "That is impossible, I bought that chess board at an airport in Fiji five years ago."
After explaining to us the types of wood it was made of, and exactly how he made it, my uncle runs over to a mirror and takes it off the wall. He says, "This mirror is made from the same lumber as the chess board."
Sure enough, you could see the exact same grains and knots in both pieces.
