I've got 27 1970s cents.
Is the SD variety the kind one would need magnification in order to detect in-hand, or should it be obvious enough to detect with the naked eye?
Also, I know coop's got an image of red 1970s floating around illustrating the difference, but I find it not very helpful with cents in their wonted, extracted from the wild, brown coloration.
Could someone with both a SD and a LD in brown post pics of theirs?

Here is how I tell them apart personally. I hold the coin with the L in LIBERTY at the six o'clock position. That allows my eye to make an imaginary line headed up across the tops of the numbers in the date. If the second 7 is slightly to the right of that line it is a Large Date. If the 7 is even with the tops of the other numbers it is a Small Date. Also, the word LIBERTY, especially the last few letters, are always weakly struck, almost to the point of being unreadable. I don't have any images to post; I'm on my work computer! I have a photo of a Small Date that I found coin roll hunting; when I get home to my computer later today I will try to dig it out.
Went through my photos; can't find it. And I no longer have the coin. Glad to see that John posted a pic of one.

I think it will, I'll have to check my stash again tonight. My pessimistic half thinks "just my luck I'll have had all LDs all along  " |

I was certain I had to find one in circulation, so I started seeing a small date where none existed. But, once you see a SD in person, you realize how obvious they are. Although I never found one in circulation, but some here have done it--good luck!  |

the first thing I look for is where the tip of the bottom of the 7 is. That usually tips me most of the time. It I question I go to the angle of the inside of the 9 and whether the ends of the 9 are flat or chizzled.  |

After finaly breaking down and buying a loupe and getting it, I poured all over my 1970s cents yesterday. I found one that I think is a SD. I then spent a half an hour plus trying to get the best photos I could muster of the thing. here is a link to those photos. Do I haz da small daet? |

still looks LD to me. looks like top of the 7 not in line with tops of 9 or 0

Sorry--I'm thinking a LD, but the pics are sorta small.
It's very difficult to find one in circulation.

Most newbies and even others have difficulty with IDing SDs. Many have suggested studying coop's fine pictures or even buying a SD to keep as a reference. Either way, it's just like learning to ride a bike. Difficult at first, but when you get it-you got it!

I can tell most of the time with out magnification. I go off the bottom of the 7 and the top of the 7. If the bottom of the 7 is below the 0 its a LD....if it is even with it..then I go to the top and see if it looks even with the 9 and the 0. If that is even then I look at the 9 and make sure it curls inwards and points towards the middle of the 7 and not to the bottom of it. If all these things are present I feel I don't need a loupe. If some are and some are not then I would go in for a closer look. With all of that being said....I have never found a wild SD....I bought mine in MS64RD condition...
