My camera just died on me and wonder if anyone can recommend a compact camera which would give me great resolution close-ups for coin photography? I'm really wanting to keep the price as low as possible and even looking for a secondhand. Appreciate anyone's recommendations. Cheers :) Edited by Sudoku 04/04/2012 6:56 pm

I gave up trying to use a camera. I use one of these: http://www.kaiserbaas.com/kaiser-ba...l-microscopeAvailable (Online only from Officeworks) : http://www.officeworks.com.au/retai...s/LAKBA03031but if you want one immediately, go to Harvey Norman, tell them Officeworks will do it for $67 and they will match the price. Jaycar also have a slightly better version, $99: http://www.jaycar.com.au/productVie...form=KEYWORD

notwithstanding Nancy's excellent advice ...
a few years ago, I needed a camera. I noticed that another CCF contributor, Yass, consistently had high quality pics, so I asked what he used. He answered a Canon, of The IXUS range. So I bought one, and was very happy for several years, until a cyclone blew some rain into an area that I had imagined was safe ... and my Ixus grew mould inside the lens. So, last year, I bought another, but later model: Canon IXUS220HS. And I got it at Hardly Normal when they had a two-for-one offer - two for $229; and gave the other one to my brother for his birthday.
I use these cameras for everything: coins, upto landscapes.
Why I'm happy: very compact, and particularly slim, so it is genuinely pocket-sized*; Battery-life is remarkable; it has plenty of zoom and all the other things you expect from a modern digital.
*pocket-sized is important to me, because I like to take it with me. Remember the adage: "The best camera in the world is the one that you have with you."
Canon bring out a new model every six months, and the just-superceded ones can be found a really good prices.
I looked at buying on-line, but the sellers with low prices always charge $69 or $99 for postage, so I've bought my last two cameras locally, after shopping around.

I have a USB microscope but it can't zoom out far enough to shoot the whole of even the smallest coin & the colour is always wrong so I only use it for close in detail. I prefer the convenience of the results I get from my scanner even tho' it shows up the slightest imperfections that you wouldn't normally notice but it's good enough for me. To improve on that I'd have to spend money that I'd rather spend on coins on high quality & to me, expensive equipment.

With the USB Scope, I can get a fairly large item totally in the picture, roughly A5 size fits easily. Close ups of coins are a piece of cake. Check here: http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...IC_ID=111156

Who knew, a digital microscope from Office Jerks and didn't even think of my scanner, doh. I'll def check out HN's as Harv has def come to the party thanks to The Kogan Stoush and you really are hard pressed to find a better deal from competitors instore or online if Harv's got it in his stock list. Apologies to Admin for putting my post in the wrong area too. Thanks everyone for your great pointers!

No big thing, Sudoku. That's what we're here for, and by and large you guys are so well-behaved that we get bored sometimes. Don't hesitate to bump this thread into the future with further questions.

Peter THOMAS - can I get some pictures from the Canon IXUS 220 that you bought? And I'm seeing a listing of a Canon 300 HS / IXUS 220 for $160, brand new in box, 12.1MP model with 5x optical zoom... is that the same one you have?
Nancy, thank you so much for posting your microscope pictures. That helps enormously in making a decision.
If anyone has pictures with this Canon 300 HS / IXUS 220, please post them... thanks.

USB microscopes should be available through Tandy stores in the U.S.
You can spend $200 plus on a camera, or $75 on a USB microscope.
Have a look at some of nancyc's work on othe threads to which she has posted. You will be amazed!
