Here is a 1910 gold coin, King Edward.

It was placed into it's own clasp but the coin itself hasn't been harmed.

Can value be ascertained?

Bullion value. Depends whether it is a half sovereign or sovereign. Check the diameter for us. Half sovereign very roughly $200. Full sovereign very roughly $400. The holder is probably gold also and worth something depending on purity.

Rats...it's my business partners coin heirloom. I just took a photo of it and gave it back to him.

It seemed like a small coin, somewhat around the size of just a bit bigger than a Canadian quarter.

If it is about a size of a quarter it must be a sovereign (it's a little smaller than a quarter though). Half sovereign is about the size of a cent.

Ask your friend to check for a mint mark above the date. If he is lucky the coin could be minted in freshly opened mint in Ottawa, mint mark "C". In this case the coin would cost more than just the bullion value. If the mint mark is M, P, or S (all Australian), or none at all (Britain) then it's nothing special.
