Do Canadian banks keep any in stock? What bank policies are in place with regards to both issuing and receiving them? Has anybody made a point of trying to spend half dollars/get them into circulation?

My local RBC says no, and they can't source any either.

They'll accept them since they're still legal tender, and I suppose they would hand them back out if they happened to just get some in. I have a pending deal with one of the tellers at my local RBC to buy her collected 50 cent pieces. No idea if they're silver or nickel.

They've been strictly NCLT for a few years now, so the mint has made a point of getting them out of circulation. If you could get your hands on them at face value, I suppose you could reintroduce them to circulation. I've heard of other people in this forum doing just that.

Some banks have half dollars in stock, it's a hit and miss game with them, however, all banks will readily accept them for change or deposit into your savings account.
As far as spending half dollars at private businesses, good luck! They not only have the right to reject 'em, but most clerks have never seen one or even knew of their existence. When I tried spending a roll I had a few years ago, I had experiences from cashier's calling their manager out to the front cash to dialing 9-1-1 believing I was trying to pass funny money. I just grabbed my halves and ran like Hell.

lol.. Glenzy.

My bank keeps all they get back in, and they let me know when they have any as, the manager tells me that the paper work is crazy when they have to send them back in.

Thanks for the replies, everybody. Pretty much confirms what I thought. I guess a good relationship with your local tellers is the key! :-)
