Interesting Find From Circulation

Opened a roll of nickels at work the other night--well, let's start here. Already in change just that night I was handed a 1920/1 (the date's worn--needs restored, but there's definitely a 2 in there) Buffalo nickel, a 1964 silver dime, a wrinkled-but-decent 1988A $1 bill (doubt it's worth anything, but it's the year I was born so: cool!), and a torn-but-holy-crow-how-so-old 1963A that, but for the tear, is only slightly worn. In addition, I'd cracked a few rolls of pennies and found FOUR(!!) P4 pennies--there've been a lot of them in this box, but that's way unusual. I can go weeks without finding a single one.

So around the middle of the shift I had to refill my nickels and opened a roll and went "You know, I never check nickels, but I just have this feeling. What the heck, the store's empty, I can spare 20 seconds" and tipped them all out into my hand . . .


1944 S War Nickel!!



I want to ask our new manager what bank he's using. The wrappers are String & Sons instead of Garda/Brinks (both, I have discovered, use the shrinkwrap--I asked a Garda driver who stopped into my store and was kind enough to answer me when I explained I was a roll searcher), the non-penny wrappers are all the kind you buy from the store instead of shrinkwrap, and holy moly the stuff I've found in the last week (case in point: three silver pieces in two days, in about $50 worth of change!?)!! That's where I want to start getting my rolls to search!!


On a less "HOLY WHOA I WAS LOOKING FOR ONE OF THESE" front, two very lovely Canadian cents, 1997 and 1998, I pulled for trade. ALL IN ONE NIGHT!!

@Raymo, you bet! That was a super-unusual night (I shared with one of my customers who collects "old change" <-- his term, and his response was "You should go play the lottery!"), but I have a nice little collection of silver, silver certificates, wheatheads, Indian-heads, buff nickels, etc. all from my change drawer (one of my coworkers even got a Morgan dollar!).

I think part of the reason I find so much cool stuff is because when someone who's very obviously on a "fixed income" (e.g. pension, Social Security) tries to hand me a silver coin, I feel morally obligated to hand it back and say "Ma'am/sir, that's going to be worth a lot more if you sell it as a collectable than if you spend it" and, if asked, give them a roughish estimate how much. I've had two people, both of them counting out change for gas, take back the coin to sell, and I figure they needed the extra five bucks far, far more than I need the thrill of having yet another silver Kennedy or 1944 quarter. Most of the rest ask if I collect, then either tell me I can "have it" (translation: buy it out of my drawer) or will pay with something else and then outright give me the coin. Either way, coin karma smiles on you (the day after I turned down a 1964 Kennedy, an 1883 Indian-head penny in XF-or-possibly-higher turned up in my drawer, for example).
